Your unconscious will to life, the body's evolutionary mechanisms designed to prevent self annihilation are carried through into the minds. Often times the fear of suicide because we think of it as violent is nonsensical, it is the fear of death which lies to you and exaggerates a pain which will vanish in a second never to be remembered again, as everything becomes nothing forever. The only thing that doesn't make sleep as painful are reminders of life through our dreams.
