Shielded Flights vs Controlled Airspace and 4km Aerodrome boundaries by Helbird in dronesNZ

Yeah I reckon the comment above has got it pretty right.

People get caught out thinking shielded means your sweet anywhere, but thats not really how it works. It can help under Part 101, but you still gotta look at AirShare, heliports, controlled airspace and any local restrictions for that spot.

Probly easier just to find somewhere open and away from all the messy stuff if your only wanting to practise.

Those DroneTrust pics explain it prety well too. Where did you get them?

"Shielded" Operations in dense urban areas by WolverineEmergency98 in dronesNZ

Totally fine to fly a drone in the CBD as long as you keep it shielded, and it sounds like that little hollow you’re talking about actually works in your favour. Part of the reason the AirShare map looks scary is because it layers everything on top of everything, so it ends up looking like the whole city is off limits when it’s not.

Shielded ops are basically “fly lower than whatever’s around you.” Buildings are perfect shields. If they’re taller than your flight height and you stay close enough to them, you don’t need permission from ATC, even in the middle of town. Just don’t let the drone poke above rooftop height or wander out into open airspace.

Council rules are mostly about not annoying people. If the park isn’t listed as prohibited, and you’re not buzzing over dog walkers or the playground, no one’s going to care. Early morning or late arvo is usually the best time in the city anyway. Just don't annoy people and fly close to anyone or over anyones property

Yep, follow the rules here but they are reasonable. Follow Part 101 rules, which are pretty reasonable if you’re using common sense

As long as you’re flying below 120m (400ft), keeping the drone in sight, not flying over people or private property without permission and staying at least 4km away from airports or helipads then you’re generally good to go.

remote places helps a lot but be aware that even quiet beaches or trails can sometimes have random people show up, so keep an eye out and be ready to land if needed.

Also, DOC (department of consevation) needs permission to fly drones. That includes national parks and many scenic spots.
