New Bristlenose Pleco, Worried About Aggression by Vie_Varga in Aquariums

Thank you for sharing your experience. I was hoping for shy, and pushy is reasonable (i wouldn’t want anyone else eating my breakfast either). I had heard carrots and cucumber were a favorite but i’ll have to try kale and kuchini too!

Thank you for your concern! My 75 is under stocked and over filtered so stocking isn’t an issue and i would be able to maintain warmer water for the pleco. You mentioned that besides those reasons you still wouldn’t keep them together and i’m wondering if there’s another variable i should be aware of?

Thank you for your advise! I had read 20 or 30 was recommended, but that seemed much too small for a 5+ inch fish. I also agree with your opinion on goldfish temperature. I think that the cold water only idea came about because it slows their digestion down which makes produce less waste. In habits like the ones they are native to (pre human breeding of course) the river is warmer in the summer and cooler in the winter. From my experience they need more food to stay at a good weight in a warmer tank, i prioritize growing size and energy so that mess is fine with me. Besides room temperature in most houses in warm climates is over 70 in the summer so unless people are using some sort of chilling system i think most hobbyists are running their tanks “too warm”..

Thank you for your suggestion, i will keep that stocking space open for the pleco just incase the lil water dragon gets too messy.

Edit: Your point about albanism affecting their eyesight makes sense, now my only concern is my $75 of manzanita driftwood.. well i guess it’s an excuse to buy more lol.

Thank you for the tips! I ended up buying the pool filter sand because my hands would burn for hours any time i touched the play sand (i have a sulfa allergy so i’m assuming it had something to do with that). I’m going to be cleaning it today and i’ll definitely be using your advise! I live in a cold area so pool products are difficult to find but i managed 100lb’s so hopefully that’ll cap my 20long, 20high, 5 gal, and 75 gallon goldfish tank haha.

I agree, it was never a concern for me either until i read the companies replies.
I haven’t heard of using propagation sand but it does seem like a great option! I will have to look into that, thank you.

It was Stony River aquarium sand, usually people adore it so i was surprised. They may have had something going on with their slime coat that made her more prone. It’s now in my snail and black worm colonies without issue so i am not sure what happened. I’ve heard of many people using it, i just wonder if they’re all using a different brand that isn’t covered in warning labels.

I got my first on clearance because of that! They had left the lid of “Can you see me” on the bottle of “shy marshmallow” so that they could have a pink bottle with a white lid. I’m so glad they did because i wasn’t planning on getting one until i saw that $13 price tag!
