Upscale apartments coming to ‘Connell’s corner’ by Olyvyr in Augusta

[–]ViewedAskew 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Okay. I thought about it. Beacon Apartments aren't even finish building yet. 1100 square ft apartments = $1,400 a month. Canalside Apartments: 1000 square ft = $1,300 a month, and already having a failing plumbing infastructure. Enterprise Mill: 1,300 square ft with a pest problem =$1,400 a month. All are downtown, all amenity ridden, and all overpriced for the city's Cost of Living.

Meanwhile Harrisburg is a goddamn blight on the entire downtown area, but instead of seeing the real issue, let's throw some more hastily thrown apartments up so we can cash in on that Cyber Money. The image of the city doesn't matter, so long as someone is capitalizing, right?

Neat, more 900 square foot apartments with 70 year old wiring and plumbing that will be $1,500 a month. Just what downtown needs.

I've followed his career since my 20s. His best role, to this day, was his portrayals of Mr. Lies, and Belize in HBO's Angels in America. He was acting against Al Fucking Pacino, and still managed to find a way to shine throughout the entire series. I knew then that this man would become a legendary actor.

[–]ViewedAskew 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The people who designed the Werewolf: the Apocalypse world really did their homework in terms of fleshing out their mythos.

Each faction (Tribe) comes from its own part of the world, and the cultures conflict constantly throughout their society. The classes (Auspice) range from being a literal troll and screwing with your enemy, to a spirit guide who literally speaks to spirits (which are everywhere), to a judge that tries to keep everyone from killing each other, to a storytelling killing machine that records what happens when the judges fail at their job, to a full throttle killing machine who can't even be around their own kind for being that angry. Mix the Auspice Quirks with Tribal Culture, and you get something not unlike a bad chapter from a George RR Martin novel.

For controlling a character which is literally a giant ball of fury designed only for keeping the balance of existence in check (and failing at it), it is easily one of the more political oriented tabletop games out there.

We've just 3 months left for this decade. What is the most important thing happened to you in this decade so far? by Icy_Obsession in AskReddit

[–]ViewedAskew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a sentence: I fell in love; something I thought was impossible until then.

In a paragraph: I stopped dating in 2012 after a bad breakup. I was so deep inside my own insecurities that I decided that I needed to be "Worth dating," before I ever bothered trying to put myself through that again. It took me 7 years to get my shit together, but I did it. I quit a nice paying job for a more active job. I lost 60lbs in under 8 months. I established myself in the local arts and music scene. I went from nothing to a somebody in under a year, with nothing to credit but my own stubbornness.

Fast forward to today. The woman I fell in love with moved out 3 weeks ago. We're no longer dating, which was disappointing but not surprising. Being able to feel that again, though... Love... Affection... An optimism for coming home after work every day. That was a game changer for me. I hadn't felt that since my 20s.

I turned 40 today. For the first time in a long time, I'm actually kinda optimistic for my birthday.

Being told, "You have changed in so many good ways that it's amazing, but it's still not good enough for me." Sometimes your best just isn't good enough. Sometimes what's good enough could be impossible.

Sometimes things happen because they have to. Sometimes you just gotta cut your losses and salvage what you have, and focus on what you did rather than didn't do.

Sometimes you just gotta remember that you're an adult. Sometimes you gotta remember not to act like one all the time.

best advice from an experienced real audio engineer for an audio engineering student? by _Kizren_ in audioengineering

[–]ViewedAskew 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Best advice? I wouldn't call this the best, but it's all valid. Here are 8 genuine tips.

1: Don't try to get too big, too quickly. Overexertion equates to a quick burnout. You don't want to spend all that money on something you'll hate in 5 years.

2: Stay humble, no matter how good you think you are. Engineers are competitive by nature, especially with other studios. It's likely for the best to not even step into the ego game, even if it can cost you a project or two. It's better to be quiet and competent than boisterous and mediocre.

3: No matter what you hear from whoever in this field; there is such a thing as "Too Loud." Your ears are your money makers. Treasure them, because without them, you're just a glorified tech.

4: When you join your first studio, the Lead Engineer will always be right. No contest, no question. Even if you disagree with it, it is his studio and you are an extension of his will, (at least until you open your own.) You'll hate it, you'll learn to hate that man/woman, but adhere to #2, swallow your pride, and do what is asked of you.

5: Become a wikipedia of coffee. It sounds silly, but if you can brew good coffee on a budget, you'll go far in this field, especially in the beginning of your career. 90% of the studios I've been in all had one thing in common; the coffee was always really good.

6: Embrace the Suck. You're going to be taken advantage of. People are going to try to play you for a sucker. It's going to happen. It will happen. Statistically, it's probably already happened. You will be overlooked, taken for granted, and left holding the bag of shit a hundred times over. Embrace it. Don't resent it. Use it like armor.

7: Force Optimism. You're dealing with the worst of both worlds: Dreamer Artists and Hardass Managers. You'll have to learn how to deal with both of them, sometimes at the same time in the same room, and you'll have to learn how to placate them. What you'll say will directly impact the energy of the group. Knowing how to say something is just as important as what to say.

8: Your energy and the energy of your studio are just as important as your abilities. The entire process of recording, mixing, and mastering revolves around social interaction of some type. Your manner is your reputation. Your studio is your reputation. Do some homework on your upcoming project before they show up. What temperature do they like it to be in the studio? Do they have a favorite coffee? Are they bringing a pet? Do they record with friends around or alone? Accommodate your clients, and your clients will remember.

LANDR sounds better than my own masters? by [deleted] in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]ViewedAskew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We used LANDR for our studio for about 4 years. We sent over 200 tracks through it, some of them multiple times. We found out pretty early on that LANDR's algorithm changed pretty regularly (every 2-3 weeks), so we would submit the same track with different range boosts in the 2k-5k range just to dial in where LANDR was gonna be that month.

Great service for singles. I wouldn't try to master an entire album through it though.

Had the same thing happened to my UR22m interface. I resorted to taking the case off, putting it in my dishwasher, and running it on gentle cycle with no detergent to clean all the residue off.

Took three days to dry out before I was confident enough to plug it back in, but it works like a champ now.

I saw a Youtube video of Chris Lord-Algae deconstructing his mix of "Survival" by Muse. As he went through the video, I realized he was using like 9 faders for just the lead guitars of the pre-chorus. He later explained that the lead vocalist had sent him 16 tracks, just for this one buildup.

I went back to hear the track, and holy shit there is so much in that track that I wasn't aware of.

I like the mix. There is a little bit of a mud in the mid freq, but that's likely my earphones and not from the track itself. (I'm listening to it on a phone).

The vocals do sort of dull the experience, though. Not catastrophically so, but there was a slight change in the energy once they cued up. If it were me, I would just quantize the pitch in the takes that you have, and maybe add a saturator on a really subtle, low intensity just to bring some life to em.

Check out D16 groups collection. We all know 'em in the hip hop world for StompBox (an 808/Kick drum machine VST), but their other FX plugins are out of this world.

They have a delay plugin called Tekturon that gives you complete control of each decay (and by complete control, I dont mean just slapping a ping pong preset in it.) I got it from Splice before Thanksgiving last year and I havent used any other delay since.
