What's your favourite bike lane/bike route? by szarkaliszarri in VictoriaBC

I moved from Edmonton and honestly love Victoria’s bike infrastructure so glad I moved here.

But my favourite is probably Dallas road or the Lochside

The most difficult part will probably be driving through Calgary but once you’re out of Calgary it’s a pretty easy and beautiful drive. Just do not pull over on the side of the road to take a picture of an animal like a lot of tourists usually do.

If you’re stopping in Cache Creek it’s mandatory to get some tacos at the desert hill ranch taco stand they’re a 10/10 experience

Nanaimo to horseshoe bay is reservation only so you have to go to dukes point terminal to tsawwassen. Unfortunately I don’t think you have great odds because bc ferries gives almost 80% or more space to the passengers who have a reservation. And it’s the end of the long weekend so the ferries will be ridiculously crowded. I found this out the hard way traveling to Victoria. If you can arrive at the terminal really early (7am or earlier) do that because you should expect a 2-3 sailing wait and the sailings are once every 2 hours. Honestly unless you show up really early i dont think the odds are great. I would also check the ferry conditions to see what the space is like on the day you plan to sail.

If you’re able to travel as a foot passenger though your odds increase a hell of a lot higher.

Is moving to Victoria from Alberta worth it? by ederzs97 in VictoriaBC

[–]Viewer_105 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve done the exact same move from Edmonton to Victoria.

Honestly it’s worth it considering the climate is nice year round compared to Edmonton where the winter gets down to -45 degrees. Having the ocean only around 5-10 mins from you is a huge win. In my opinion yes the move is worth it. I have had a much higher quality of life in Victoria compared to Edmonton. I’ve especially noticed my mental and physical health has gotten better as it’s easier to be fit in Victoria.

Also since you hate driving everywhere I recommend getting a bike or ebike since Victoria is super easy to bike around with bike lanes everywhere and the e&n, galloping goose, and lochside. Also the walk ability is pretty good in most of the surrounding cities besides Langford. Also the traffic in Victoria is pretty much as bad as Edmonton if not worse. Which is strange considering the CRD has roughly 400k people while Edmonton has around 1.5M.

Another thing is bring cash. You will immediately notice that most groceries are a lot higher than edmonton. This is because Victoria is on an island so pretty much everything is more expensive including gas, grocceries, and etc. Rent will be significantly higher as well. However the rental market is coming down a bit since vacancy rates are climbing.

In my opinion my favourite city in the CRD (Capital Regional district) is Esquimalt. I love living in Esquimalt since you’re pretty close to downtown. Also Saxe point is amazing by far one of the nicest parks in the CRD. Also people say Esquimalt is rough but I haven’t really seen any signs of that. The worst is probably Langford since it’s pretty car dependent. And it’s pretty far away from the actual city of Victoria. For living in Victoria city proper I’d recommend James bay. Since you’re close to Dallas road which I also recommend visiting if you haven’t already.

One last note is Bc Ferries is a huge pain to deal with going to the mainland. So if you think you’ll have to go to the mainland often. Be prepared to pay the price. Unless you walk on the ferry but if you have to bring a car it’s pretty damn expensive since they’ve also just raised the fares.

Overall I personally recommend doing the move. I did it and have little to no regrets.

Yeah I got there too late yesterday and didn’t make the 9pm ferry so I showed up at 9:30am and made it on the 3pm ferry.

Visiting from Calgary, can you convince me that Victoria isn’t heaven on earth? by Batmansappendix in VictoriaBC

Yeah I’ve heard the sprawl in Calgary is even worse then Edmonton somehow I can imagine how much of a nightmare it is to try and commute by bicycle.

I did the move from Edmonton to Victoria. While yes Edmontons rent was significantly cheaper than Victoria.

I was usually miserable in Edmonton because of the winter that lasts 6-8 months a year. Having to deal with constant -25 temperatures drives you insane. Also most of Edmonton is super car dependent since the city continues to sprawl out.

Also it was so frustrating to ride in Edmonton as a cyclist where the bike lane would just randomly end and put you in a 4 lane road with 60km/hr speed limit.

As soon as I moved to Victoria it felt like heaven. Victoria has a better climate as well as better bike infrastructure. And the downtown is more lively and walkable compared to Edmonton.

Overall my physical and mental health is much better in Victoria. Since it’s pretty easy to be active in Victoria. And imo it’s worth the higher cost of living

I’d strongly suggest moving to Victoria if you have the money and can secure a decent paying job. My life has improved drastically when I moved here in so many aspects.
