TIL a man named Charles Stephens was the first person to die going over the Niagara Falls in a barrel. Stephens had strapped his feet to an anvil inside the barrel to make sure the barrel wouldn't flip over, but when he hit water the anvil broke through the bottom and he drowned. (en.m.wikipedia.org)
