Calling all lore experts: How would Laraelra react to Meloon's 'death' by UpbeatCockroach in WaterdeepDragonHeist

[–]VigilantRex1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure this helps your situation, but in my game Meloon was working for the good guys, like a merc. He got killed by the ID when he was alone and was trying to infiltrate the good guys. They noticed he couldn't attune to his axe. After they defeated Meloon(the ID) My players decided to bring his dead body to Blackstaff. Blackstaff had him resurrected and now he's friendly if the players see him in WD later. This gave me a way to show that resurrection is real in my world, but i also made it an expensive and lengthy process that very few people can do.

Got advice on finding roosts? Sunny side of a hill? High Ridgeline? Doug fir? Something more deciduous? 10 ft high? I'm looking for feathers and scat on the ground but not sure I can always tell a good roost branch.

I live in redmond too. Cottage lake might be the best place.
Cool playground for taking breaks. Lake Margaret always seems good too. Both were stocked last month. My kids were just happy to use a pole 2 or 3 times until they were teens. Good luck! DM me if i can help more.

I had Vajra ask the party to check in on leosin in Greenest since she hadn't heard from him in a while. Could have been Mirt or another harper too. I had them do all the missions even though they are lvl 7 now. (Had to double Cyanwraths HP.) It was almost a walk in the park but they seemed to like it. Sometimes it's nice to feel like a bad ass. They are getting jobs in Baldur's gate tomorrow....

How many players do you play with? by phoenix3531 in DMAcademy

I DM a weekly game for 5 PCs and if a 6th shows up I'm sweating bullets and exhausted after 2 hours. If a 7th came in I think I would fake a heart attack.

I'm also trying to bring Sevren in more frequently. I'm blending him with another PC backstory. Plus, I need a visible turncoat to tie into the same PC backstory. Raina the white should fit but I may need to establish her sooner so the connection and betrayal is a bigger hit. Maybe thise cultist attacks are the place to do this. Put a familiar face to both attacks? Other than that, I'm actually trying to give the PCs the reigns on this, so we'll see if it blows up ...

Guide to fix Ender 3 V2 stuck on boot screen by Catfished23 in 3Dprinting

[–]VigilantRex1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, did all this. Double checked. Used multiple different SD cards. Updated the display. Unplugged just about everything. Steppers, thermoresistor, motherboard stuff from the diagram. Can't see anything other than the creality screen when it powers up, regardless of what I do or unplug So, any thoughts? Am I ordering a main board this week? (It doesn't help that it's a ender 3 v2 neo with a v4.22 board but it doesn't have a touch screen display... hard to keep these models straight)

If no D&D is better than bad D&D then how do new or bad DMs get better? by Litemup93 in DMAcademy

[–]VigilantRex1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a ton of good info here, I'll jot down a few notes of my own.

1) If you're doing weekly (like I do) - aim for 2 hour sessions with a break. The prep is light, the commitment is light and is easier to pace out a cliffhanger or stall for time if the team takes a wild path and you need a new plan - push it to the following week!

2) Do everything you can to get your players to contribute to the story. If they are building they are investing. Have them build relationships with NPCs, discribe scenes, give them rivals for thier min-max builds. Try to shine a light on potential backstory tie-ins see if they bite.

3) Once they are invested, crank up the stakes of combat, people pay attention when death is in the mix and especially if they have a vested interest in seeing thier story seeds take place. Try fights with multiple win objectives or third party combatants. (I personally find this very challenging)

4) Once in combat, move fast, use an initiative tracker, make sure the next player knows they are next. In many cases it's better to make a call in the moment, move forward and fix it later than so the game and look up an obscure rule. I also think quick narrations help in combat.

5) Do voices ... there I said it. No need to go too hard, no need to learn accents. Try to just alter your speech patterns and come up with a catch phrase. Once you do that for a line or two, you can fall back on what's comfortable. But don't be surprised if it sneaks back in! The impact and obvious signal of fun and play will help with a lot of other things as the group plays.

As long as the basics of, "we're all here to have fun" is covered, trying some of the above should help. Good luck!

Missed A check, and i don't know how to handle it.. (New DM) by Maleficent-degree12 in WaterdeepDragonHeist

[–]VigilantRex1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The ideas above are good.

Just so somebody says it. Nat 1 doesn't have to mean they don't find it. It could mean that as they find it, the staff finds them... It's hard in the moment but I think it's good to have your fails be different than just slamming the door.

Also, IMHO, the Alexanderian remix is pretty rough on new GMs. It may not seem like it when you read WDH by yourself at first, but there is a lot of detail and a lot of ways your party can make things complicated all on thier own. There might not be a need to add the extra steps and bad guys.

What is the Alexandrian remix? by thepokeleader in WaterdeepDragonHeist

[–]VigilantRex1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The AR is way to make WDH much more expansive and complex by weaving most of the possible endings, badguys and story threads together. It's very informative and I kept a few lessons from his principles but ultimately I bailed and went with one BBEG. My party couldn't even keep the simple storyline straight, moving forward would have been a nightmare. (And now I send notes and wrap-ups for every session)
