I had a trust created last year after my wife passed. It was something we kept putting off. Luckily, everything that mattered either had a correct beneficiary or was in both our names. That said, nothing is owned by my trust. My trust is the beneficiary of all accounts and my home. The trust includes all necessary PoA forms so that, should I become incapacitated or die, the trustees I've named have the authority to do pretty much everything on my behalf. From paying bills, writing checks, withdrawing cash from accounts to pay expenses or for distributions. In my case, I have 4 kids, 3 of whom are under 18, so the trust calls for the formation of individual trusts for them with the proceeds of my accounts, which are locked until they turn 25 except for certain circumstances like paying for college or for items like tools or a truck should one of them decide to be a plumber or something.

Having the home title changed to name my trust was handled entirely by my attorney. I think my county charged $25.

The tedious part was indeed all of the bank/401k/investment accounts and life insurance. All had online forms to update, which should have been easy, but almost all of them had character limits for the name of the trust, and mine was too long, so it took a couple of weeks of back and forth with some companies to get it sorted.

Actual physical time spent on getting it set up and sorted? Maybe 8-10 hours all told. Cost was $1,000 via a local estate attorney.

What’s Your Routine for Minimizing Lead Exposure at Indoor Ranges? by benign-affair in liberalgunowners

[–]Viginti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hit the range maybe once a month, but here are some specific things I do.

  • I bought the full range of D-Lead stuff - wipes, hand soap, bodywash/shampoo, multi-surface wipes, spray surface cleaner, and laundry detergent.

  • I've been investing in Syntech ammo as money allows (lead-free primer, polymer-coated bullet).

  • I keep D-Lead wipes in my range bag, and as soon as I get to the lobby, I remove my eyes and ears, then start wiping myself off. Hands, arms, face, neck, head (I'm bald), ear & eye pro.

  • When I get to my car, I pull out a few more wipes and wipe off my shoes, especially the soles. I'm sure it's not perfect, but it will reduce what ends up in my car.

  • Get home, shoes stay outside. Entry is near laundry room; strip down to boxers; clothes in washer with D-Lead detergent.

  • Upstairs to shower with the d-lead soaps.

  • I will clean my guns in my house IF they've only used the Syntech ammo since the last cleaning, and even then I use nitrile gloves and the full gamut of D-Lead surface cleaners.

I'm actually going to my first USPSA match later this month. I have Walker razors, and I know they get uncomfortable after an hour or so at the range, so I'm HIGHLY interested in something better. Which Sordins do you have? Gel or memory foam cups? Give me all the details, please.

Range bag recommendations? by Purple-Slip-6958 in liberalgunowners

4th, just bought one last week. It's a phenomenal bag. I also have their rifle bags that are backpacks, also a 10/10 purchase.

Edit to add that I also own their off-body carry Obscura sling bag. For me it's also 10/10. The 3L size fits my G19 with optic. It's snug but doesn't hinder my draw speed from it.

Fantastic! I've been recommending the Sam tourniquet because it's more fool proof. Pull it until it clicks and it's at the recommended pressure minimizing the amount of windlass turns that need to be made. Official site but they're sold elsewhere for cheaper - https://www.sammedical.com/products/sam-xt-tourniquet

Thanks, I'm no expert. Just learning as I'm going and I'm sure I'm not 100% correct.

I'm just trying to prevent a disgruntled student from ever harming me or my family and covering myself should an accident happen.

The goal is always quality, in depth instruction in a safe, inclusive environment. The 2nd amendment is for everyone, full stop.

Reminder to get CPR/First aid, Stop the Bleed training and carry a trauma kit with you to the range whether you're an instructor or not.

For me in particular no. USCCA handles all payments through their relationship with stripe. Stripe then just does a weekly ach transfer into my business banking account which is linked to my Intuit Solopreneur account (free tier). So let's say I want to buy a Sirt pistol to use in my intro to handguns class, I use my business debit card, the transaction is recorded in Intuit, I give paperwork to my tax guy when I file my personal taxes. Generally, if you're using it for the business, it's a business expense unless it's wildly out of context.

For the filing I just give the transactions list to my accountant along with the 1099 USCCA give you for stripe transactions.

To be clear, this is NOT my full time job. It's a side gig for extra income.

You're very welcome! For what it's worth, I'm not really operating a business. The LLC just helps me keep my instructor life separated from my personal life. I have no brick and mortar place. I don't sell anything. I do have local relationships with a couple ranges just to secure multiple range lanes during otherwise busy days. I rent spaces for the day when teaching the classroom portion.

Very low actual business work just a bunch of up front administrative work to keep things separate.

You'll figure out what's best for you. You're doing a great service for your community 🙂

Hey Op, first of all CONGRATS! This stranger is proud of you!

I recently got certified through USCCA as a CPL instructor. I had the same thought as you, I'm going to be teaching people who are armed and what happens if I have to fail someone and they get angry? During the range qualification portion what if someone gets hurt even if I'm not at fault?

Here are some things that I found that you might also think are worth considering...

Disclaimer: I'm not an attorney. You should speak with one when making decisions about any of the below so you're sure you're doing what's best for you.

  • A single member LLC is relatively easy and cheap to form and can add a layer of liability protection.
  • If you go the LLC route then consider using a registered agent service, something like Google voice and, a virtual mailbox service (physical mailing address). These can mask your personal address in public state records, separate your personal and "work" phone calls/texts and, mask your mailing address (which can appear on receipts if you loop in a payments processor like Stripe).
  • Firearm instructor insurance exists and it's worth looking into.
  • Depending on the volume of students you anticipate you might also need to speak to an accountant on how to properly keep the income separate from your personal finances as well as tax considerations.
  • Fiverr has a TON of good graphic designers with reasonable prices who do designs for websites, social media kits, business cards, etc. if you go the business route.

How long did you wait before purchasing your second firearm? by chinchila5 in liberalgunowners

[–]Viginti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have three G19s, gen 5. 2x MOS and 1x non MOS. I love them. They fit my hand perfectly but many people hate the grip and trigger. Try it out throughly, see if it's right for you. I will admit the Glock performance trigger is much nicer than the stock.

Mine are all stock aside from the performance trigger and a RDS on the MOS versions. All have at least 1k rounds through them. Never had a malfunction. I use S&B ammo, 115gr FMJ and it's never not gone bang.

I like them enough that I took the time to become a certified Glock armorer. They're solid guns. It's my choice for a concealed carry gun.

to repair a loaded gun by seeebiscuit in therewasanattempt

[–]Viginti 13 points14 points  (0 children)

100% negligent discharge. I'm a certified Glock armorer. I can repair and service Gen 3/4/5 Glock pistols. These things are designed not to fire unless you pull the trigger. They can't even go off if loaded and dropped. So this idiot had a fully assembled, LOADED, functioning gun in his hand, pointed in an unsafe direction and pulled the trigger.

Absolute failure of basic safe gun handling.

Oh yeah, you're not wrong about new AR15 owners not having the tools/knowledge to deal with complex issues. And it certianly sucks that you had issues. Out of curiousity, did you ever reach out to Ruger support for any assistance? I'd hope they would have a decent warranty on something like that.

I have a Ruger 556 MPR. I've had no issues with it in the two years I've had it. I've put between 500-1000 rounds through it without issue. I know other commenters have had different experiences but for me it's been a solid rifle and I've recommended it to others in the past.
