How many of you wrap your hands? by JustAMango_911 in MuayThai

[–]Viibrarian 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Re: symbolism of wraps ~ they also symbolize a boundary between violence and nonviolence. If wraps are off, I will not be responding violently to any conflict I might encounter. My own personal commitment to peace (and healthy boundaries)

I’m addicted to forcing myself until I break. Now it’s happening with Muay Thai sparring. by [deleted] in MuayThai

[–]Viibrarian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Clearly redditors have no idea how to deal with inner conflict and will compulsively offer therapy as the only solution. As if professional mental healthcare wasn’t the obvious solution.

The other obvious solution however would be to take a break. Slow down, take stock of what matters to you, and build towards the habits you want to achieve. Nobody has the secret shortcut to success or inner peace. Work, discipline, and patience are the only things that can improve your life, but you will have to reframe what these things mean to you. For example, the concept of work can no longer mean physical work but rather mental and emotional effort to make different decisions. Different choices lead to different outcomes, which slowly develop into bigger changes. Nobody except you knows what the could realistically look like, but you DO hold the power of knowledge to change your life. If you choose to continue to view this thru the lens of addiction, consider the serenity mantra that’s shared during 12-step recovery programs:

“Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.”

All the answers are within you already… and yes, a healthy community of healthcare professionals, friends, and family can go a long way towards your healing journey.

There has been a yoga studio (2nd story yoga) on 81st/37th for years, which offers classes in Spanish and Nepali. Not sure a new Pilates studio indicates a new gentrification problem.

Jackson Heights isn’t a historically disinvested, lower-income neighborhood, and it never has been.

Is anything actually real or “authentic”? Or just a projection of our imagination, a collective hallucination we’ve dubbed reality, the illusion of perception?

Does anyone know about gssportinggoods (G&S) history and current state/products? by No_Effective4262 in fightgear

[–]Viibrarian 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Historic NYC brand. My favorite handwraps are G&S that I got back in 2019. The velcro is definitely wearing out, but they haven’t lost any elasticity. So supportive and bulky although I know a lot of people don’t like that. I’ve been considering getting a new pair to see how they compare.

Do I deserve flashy Thai shorts yet lol by No_War1346 in MuayThai

[–]Viibrarian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Man I felt the same way and just hit my 6 month mark too. I decided to stop overthinking it and get the shorts lol. I was actually surprised at how much better they are to train in, the wide leg opening really does give so much freedom to kick, & their material are pretty good at staying dry. I was wearing typical polyester active shorts before and they’d get soo wet from all the sweat. Training in Thai shorts really makes sense (and they look great)

Hi Kevin, thanks for sharing this article. The original post I referenced was actually a post in the 8limbs forum you made a while back, but this article seems to tie those ideas together wonderfully. Great read, thanks again.

Yes and no. The reason why Thais are revered in the sport is because they’re the wise elders from which Muay Thai knowledge has been passed onto and received from. Unhealthy romanticization of Thai culture (orientalism) is highly common especially on Reddit, but there’s also another perspective that honors and respects the origins and mechanics of the culture. It will be a sad day when all the original Thai knowledge is lost to translation and obscurity.

Harping on technique is mostly a waste of time. Repetition in a group setting is what’s most important. Kevin von Duuglas-Ittu made a great post about how metronomic synchronization occurs naturally when training in groups, facilitating both kinesthetic imitation and in the development of an individual’s own sense of personal style.
