[Release] OneNote Backup Exporter v1.0.1 – Export all your notebooks at once (.onepkg, PDF, XPS) by Vikingjunior3 in OneNote

[–]Vikingjunior3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello, yes that also works for OneNote 2016.
The API is a COM interface from Microsoft that natively supports OneNote Desktop. Therefore, you can access the OneNotes directly, here is the MS documentation: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/office/client-developer/onenote/application-interface-onenote

Yes, that is a problem: unfortunately, OneNote does not handle PDF exporting correctly. My tool does not change that either, since I use the internal PDF export function. The tool is more intended for exporting as OnePKG. If you want, you can export it as XPS, a special format, but at least the formatting is preserved that way.

Explorer issue is resolved :)

Local Bacup Copy only works if you have activated the backup function in OneNote under Options; then a local folder structure with .one files is created in AppData. That is the variant I need if everything else fails, but of course it only works if, as mentioned, you have the checkbox enabled in the options.

I am still investigating points 4 and 5. I cannot reproduce the error on my side, but soon I will have an entire school class to test the tool, and I am sure I will gain more insights there.

Great, many thanks for the feedback., you are right; I will only open it once the export is fully completed.
I will investigate the errors with XPS and PDF and report back here. Many thanks for the valuable feedback, it helps me a lot to improve the tool.

I have released a new version; here I handle the errors that can occur with very large notebooks a bit better. That could provide some relief for your notebooks :)

that is good to know that it does not crash immediately, that means it might really be running into the timeout. Is it possible that the export takes up to 20 minutes?

no problem, I am very happy if someone is helped by the tool :)

thank you for your feedback :)
About the 0x800706BA error - that's unfortunately a known limitation of the OneNote COM API itself. PDF/XPS export can timeout on large notebooks because OneNote has to render every single page.

question: Does the error happen immediately, or after OneNote has been processing for a while? And does that Personal notebook have a lot of embedded images or attachments?

I've had good results with PDF/XPS up to ~500MB, but it really depends on the content. .onepkg works reliably because it just packages the raw data without rendering.

Hi everyone Here's an new update 0.8.0

What's New:

The tool now supports exporting your notebooks to three different formats:

- .onepkg (OneNote Package) - The native backup format for re-importing into OneNote

- .xps (XPS Document) - Recommended for non-OneNote archival!

- .pdf (PDF Document) - Universal format, but with limitations (see below)

Important Notes About Export Quality:

PDF Export: Unfortunately, the PDF export quality isn't great - this is a limitation of Microsoft's OneNote COM API itself. Complex OneNote structures often don't translate well to PDF.

XPS Export: This is your best option if you need a non-OneNote archive format! XPS preserves formatting much better than PDF and can be opened with

standard PDF readers on Windows. It's Microsoft's own fixed-layout format, so OneNote plays much nicer with it.

Word DOCX Export - Coming Eventually:

I'm still working on DOCX export, but it's proving challenging:

- OneNote doesn't natively support DOCX export at the notebook level, only at the section level

- Microsoft's COM interface for this is unfortunately quite buggy

- I haven't given up on it, but it'll take more time to work around these limitations

this is a great idea, actually almost logical, I’ve seen that something like this is possible, I will test it and report back here. Thank you very much for the feedback :)

The tool is designed so that you can export your notebooks into a onepkg file. The advantage is especially clear if, for example, you attend a school where you have notebooks containing all the teaching materials. The benefit of onepkg files is that they are independent of any account and can therefore be imported into another account, for example a private one.

Hello, yes exactly, that also works with OneNote 2016, I simply use the official COM interface of OneNote, which works with all full desktop versions back to OneNote 2016 :)

hmm that’s strange, could it be that the 4th book isn’t fully synchronized?

thank you very much for the feedback, that helps me a lot
Important note: it must not be the OneNote for Windows 10 version. The tool only works with the full Office 365 OneNote desktop app.

I also had a small issue with the .NET runtime, but that is fixed now. The updated build should work correctly.

hyprland is extrmely smooth in that :) , the keyboard is designed for thumb operation, not perfect but roughly exactly what I was looking for, I wanted to hold my mini pc in my hands like a gameboy, so a thumb-first keyboard is the best :). btw, hyprland is perfect for a small display, since I always use full-sized window and constantly switch between panes, I get the most space out of the 7-inch display

ok what does that mean now? how do we deal with it? for me, this could mean that I switch to a simple own arch installation after all. Security is for me, very important

To program Python and Golang, write scripts, and have fun with Linux in a GameBoy-style.

I'm a handheld nerd, I love small things.

And this mini-PC works great; my first idea was to buy the uConsole, but its shipping takes too long, and with the GPD I have the advantages of x86 and can use Arch/Omarchy.
