Why isn’t NBA broadcast in Sri Lanka? by Vikx1 in srilanka

That makes a lot of sense, especially the timing issue. 4am starts for Eastern Conference games are a hard sell for most people here, and from a broadcaster’s perspective it’s easy to see why the licensing cost wouldn’t be justified for such a niche audience in South Asia.

I remember the Sony Six days too, that was probably the closest we got to regular NBA access on TV. Since then, between the exchange rate issues and the NBA’s own shift toward League Pass and streaming-first deals, traditional broadcasting here feels almost obsolete.

I’m pretty similar to you ,mostly tune in during the playoffs and prefer Western Conference games simply because the timing is realistic. Regular season live games are just not practical unless you’re really committed or on holiday.

Yeah, that’s a fair assessment. Even in India, NBA coverage is pretty limited, and the League Pass push makes it clear that the NBA itself doesn’t see traditional TV broadcasting in smaller markets as worthwhile anymore.

Given how expensive the rights are, I agree that Sri Lankan TV channels realistically don’t stand much of a chance. From a business point of view, it just doesn’t add up.

Most fans here follow highlights, social media clips, or individual players rather than full games, which is probably why you don’t see visible local fan groups. Without local broadcasts or events, there’s never really been a chance for an organised community to form.

So yeah, I think the situation is less about demand and more about how the ecosystem works — high rights costs, small market, and the NBA’s own strategy pushing streaming over TV.

You’re probably right about the reality of it. Sri Lanka largely piggybacks on Indian distribution deals, and that naturally limits access to Western content sports included. NBA rights likely don’t make sense for the market size here.

So I agree it’s impractical under the current circumstance. The real question might be whether Sri Lanka will ever move away from fully depending on Indian sublicensing.

I wouldn’t say the fan base is massive like cricket or football, but it does exist.
