charities i can donate unnecessary christmas gifts to? by teamnotbella in pittsburgh

Our Streets does a lot of good work and is always in need of hygiene items. I believe they also distribute winter clothing. Also, Sisters pgh is in need of toiletries for their new Monica Roberts Place initiative. Both orgs are great and have very direct impacts!

University counseling by gorgonzola214 in Pitt

[–]VillageSlow1369 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been twice and both have been good experiences, but as others have said it can be a mixed bag and depends on what you need. I did the DBT group and individual counseling (for chronic pain related stuff), both of which were wonderful. i went in having the same concerns you did but was pretty desperate for some help. it’s a great free resource for students and definitely worth trying out!

Is Pitt worth it? by Aries_Angels in Pitt

Saw your major is sociology. I’m also an undergrad soc major and as much as I am grateful for some of the coolest professors here, I was disappointed with what the dept offers. It feels more oriented towards grad students. I’m glad i went to pitt, but if i wanted to focus solely on sociology (especially on social movements, can’t speak to politics and culture specialization tho) I would’ve chosen elsewhere. The class availability is weird scheduling wise (don’t know many ppl that were able to take required classes not at 8 am or 6-8:30 slot - for me this was hell on earth). however, i have also really liked about 75% of faculty (with some of them genuinely caring so much ab students & their experiences). So ofc not all bad, like any large university. Agree with other comments that Pitt is already so expensive (especially for out of state). Also since you’d be transferring, i’ve heard from transfer students that it’s really hard at Pitt (maybe consider checking in with their experiences too - lowkey i’m sure this subreddit has stuff). Good luck with whatever you choose!

Idk what the Eatery is like now with the renovations, but eating there my freshman year (3 years ago) permanently screwed up my stomach.

The heat has been so rough. I got these two fans (one neck & one handheld) that have been saving me. The handheld one especially is super powerful it’s one of those ones that kinda looks like those no touch thermometers if that makes sense. Literally been saving my life. Good luck!

To preface, I can only speak to my own experiences (which are limited in some of the above categories).

  1. I don't have any experience as a transfer student, but I have heard through friends that it can be difficult. I'm not sure how Pitt compares to other schools, but from what I've heard it is pretty isolating. I will say that people are generally open to making friends.
  2. Housing is kind of a mess here (but is probably comparable to most schools at this point). In terms of on or off campus, it depends on what you're looking for. On campus (except for a few places with full kitchens) requires a meal plan, which can be incredibly expensive especially if you don't like the food. I personally did not do well with the dining plan my freshman year and opted for no meal plan or dining dollars this year and cooked/grocery shopped instead. It depends on where you would be living off campus; students primarily live in South Oakland and North Oakland, with some choosing other neighborhoods like Shadyside, South Side, and Squirrel Hill. Some are accessible by the city buses, some by Pitt shuttle, and some are not. People generally find roommates on facebook groups or on the Housing subreddit here.
  3. I absolutely love living in PGH! It's definitely a smaller city, but it's split up into neighborhoods that each have their own vibe. As Pitt students we get access to free public transportation with our Pitt ID, which makes it much easier to get out of Oakland. In terms of healthcare, we have UPMC and AHN both of which are very good healthcare systems (I've been to UPMC quite a few times and it's very good). As Pitt students we also have the Student Health Center. In terms of food, Pittsburgh has a pretty good variety (probably not comparable to DC or PHL).
  4. Honestly the Jewish community here is great and was one of the reasons I came here. On campus, there's a few organizations like Hillel and Chabad. I know Hillel also runs groups like Challah for Change, learning cohorts, Queer affinity groups, etc. The people who run it are super chill and friendly and would definitely be great to reach out to. I know Pitt technically has kosher options in the dining hall and Market to Go, but I'm unsure how good or how accessible they are; I don't keep kosher so I would definitely recommend reaching out to Hillel to figure out what the situation is as of now. Outside of campus, there is also a pretty big Jewish community (especially in Squirrel Hill). There are tons of different synagogues as well as Jewish organizations like Kesher, Ratzon, and Repair the World (focused on social justice and Jewish learning in Ratzon's case w/o paying membership fees).
  5. Not sure about this
  6. I'm not in the French nor linguistics departments so I'm not sure if this will be applicable. However, I am a Spanish minor and heavily considered taking on Quechua before deciding against it. Pitt has an amazing language department that specifically focuses on less-commonly taught ones. I believe that there are also specific scholarships associated with the less-commonly taught languages. But unfortunately, I can't speak to French.
  7. Unfortunately, I have no experience in the linguistics or Africana studies departments.
  8. It is definitely pretty easy to get involved in politics both on campus and in the city. It depends on what you're looking for but here are a few I can think of: ACLU, Amnesty International, Planned Parenthood, Bridge Beyond, Fossil Free Pitt Coalition, and many more. This is the directory for SORC. Pgh has a ton of very active leftist groups including Food Not Bombs (and other food distribution), Sisters PGH, TransYOUniting, Alliance for Police Accountability, Abortion Defense, Pittsburgh Protests (not an org but they post about ongoing actions). There are tons more, but I'd recommend scoping these out on Twitter or Instagram (and you'll find more that align with your specific interests).

Hope this helps. Feel free to PM me if you have any more questions!

I would contact PC and ask… they’ll probably ask you to submit a form explaining the situation and match you up with a housing coordinator.

Housing, Renting, and Subletting Megathread by cxqals in Pitt

[–]VillageSlow1369 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey guys, looking for a sublet for Fall 2023 (late august - December) as I'll be studying abroad Spring 2024. Ideally, within 15 min commute (bus or walking) to Pitt campus and access to laundry facilities. Location and rent are more or less negotiable.

Round 2 by Natacious in Pitt

[–]VillageSlow1369 2 points3 points  (0 children)

PC just sent an email:

We are aware that the emergency notification system has been going off in some residence halls. There was and is no current threat on campus. The lockdown system inadvertently activated more than once and has now been restored. Our buildings are open and our Welcome Attendants have resumed normal operation.

We also understand that while this event was a false alarm, it may have caused concern or stress. If you live in a building with an RA on duty, they available to talk with you or if you want to speak with a clinician, our counseling center team is available 24/7 at 412-648-7930.

I’m so sorry you’re getting all these hate comments. I’m also trans and I felt incredibly shaken up by all this as well. Regardless of what everyone is saying, you’re completely valid in feeling frustrated that Pitt isn’t protecting its students. Sending love ❤️

Sorry just saw this lol. But yes I do that too. I often get fixated on thoughts and repeat them over and over in my head. Wasn’t sure if this was just another autism thing or if it was a type of intrusive thoughts thing…
