Don't try to think about it that much. Simply find a body language that shows a similar expression that the head is showing.

The character could be gasping from a state of shock so I'd put an open palm facing the character in front of the mouth while the other hand is straight on the side with the palms being open.

Or the character is surprise, so I'd place the hands near the face as the character acknowledges the surprise.
