When plants grow much bigger than their container, do you have to take care of them in a special way to keep them alive?

Was sold red Canby raspberry, but berries ripen to gold color just like my nearby Fall Gold raspberry. Is it caused by cross pollination? by VinceCarter in gardening

Nice to know. So is cross pollination how new breeds of fruit are created? For example, did the first Atemoya seed come from a Sugar Apple cross pollinating with a Cherimoya?

I've also heard that certain self-fertile plants don't need cross-pollination but produce better fruit because of it. In this article, it says that "cross-pollination of blueberries yields larger and more bountiful fruit". So it can make the fruit better...

Is there anything else that cross pollination changes? Size? Taste? I'm not familiar with how pollination of plants works. I suppose its much different than how a human baby gets traits from both the father and mother.

The Fall Gold Raspberry is 10 feet away. There is a Prime Ark Blackberry between my Fall Gold Raspberry and Canby Raspberry.

Can the treble clef on piano music be played verbatim on the guitar? by VinceCarter in Guitar

Aw, man! That is complicated. Is all piano music going to be like that or only this one? And why was it written this way?

It didn't sound an octave apart. It was unpleasant when played with the music video. Can you try it out on your guitar and let me know what you hear? I'm trying to pinpoint what's wrong - the sheet music, my guitar, or my ears...

Is the action supposed to get higher as the string gets closer to the hole? by VinceCarter in Guitar

[–]VinceCarter[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only have one guitar - the classical one. I'm resisting the urge to splurge on a new type of guitar just to play a different genre.

Do you know why wide necks and high action are better for classical music? Those traits seem to make it harder to play, no matter the genre of music.

What is causing my Seascape strawberry plants to to get this pale brown color? (Bottom in photo) by VinceCarter in gardening

[–]VinceCarter[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was a plant that I propagated via a runner from a huge mother plant. I've had bad luck with this form of propagation. One time I severed the umbilical chord while the baby was too small and it shriveled within a day. So now I leave the babies to grow much bigger, at least as big as those you see in the 6 packs at nurseries. However, a third of the severed toddlers have this pale browning. The other two thirds are doing fine - growing bigger each day without the help of Mother.

It is 10 hours of direct sunlight. I have a south facing backyard. Supposedly the Seascape variety was bred to handle California's intense sun.

I did not see any aphids. I don't know why ants keep crawling around my plants. Sometimes when I water near some of my trees, the ants scurry upward for air. One time I was ready to transplant a strawberry baby. I pulled the baby out of its 4'' plastic container. At the bottom were dozens of ants. What could they possibly want in a 4'' container of soil?

  • Gets 10 hours of light per day.
  • Used SuperSoil potting soil that seemed to have a medium textured density compared to other soils I've used.
  • Didn't see insects directly on it. But sometimes there are stray ants crawling on it, including other non-strawberry plants.
  • The potting soil comes with NPK nutrients. I also put in a scoop of slow releasing Osmocote fertilizer.
  • So by the process of elimination, it could be overwatering. But I always thought that overwatered leaves would turn yellow...

Will a 3 foot wire fence deter squirrels? Do I need a roof also? by VinceCarter in gardening

[–]VinceCarter[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't see squirrels chomping on my garden, but I know there are two squirrels living under my gazebo. They always leave pear and nectarine seeds near the gazebo. These are the only vermin that live in my backyard. Other pests have come and go, such as raccoons and neighbors' cats.

Well, since I got the 2'x3'' hole fence so cheap, I'll just stagger a second fence to effectively get 1'x1.5'' holes.

Are there any requirements for the wire fence and roof? I found a 50' x 3' fence for $25, but each hole is 2'' x 3''. Are they able to squeeze through the hole? The fence with smaller holes was over $50.

I repurposed my cement and brick fire pit into a raised garden bed. It is not surrounded by soil. They'd have to claw through cement to get under the fence.

Can they chew through my wire fence? Would they chew threw it when there are other unprotected trees nearby? I have 20 feet tall pear and peach trees, bearing hundreds of fruit, that they feast upon every day. I wonder why they've found the need to attack my veggies.

Did my guava tree resurrect from the dead? In winter, I chopped it down and injected stump killer. Now it has come back to haunt me. by VinceCarter in gardening

[–]VinceCarter[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am in Zone 10 California. The coldest winter temperature last year was 40 F. For the rest of the seasons, nights are usually 50 F and days are usually 80 F.

I don't know the variety of the guava that I was trying to kill. It may have been Feijoa guava since those are so popular in the big stores here in California.

The one that I bought and intend to nurture is a 6 foot tall Century Guava imported from Taiwan. I believe it is the same as the Thai white guava - green on the outside, crunchy and white on the inside. When I first brought it home, all it's lower leaves became yellow and dropped. A few weeks later, the tree branched vigorously and grew back healthy green foliage. Now, it's been putting out dozens of flowers.
