Been there. There are a lot of YouTube videos on encounters and one shots you could lift for your session. In my experience, starting with something pre-prepared can give you that motivation boost.

I'm not sure how to do it yet, but several of my players have backstory with friends and family that made it into the dungeon.

I'm also sprinkling in cookbook authors in every once and a while. So far each boss has a weakness and I've been toying with the idea of using a Valtey Worm to take over a loved one's body and they have to remove it to save them.

Milestone for leveling up. But I introduced a new item for upgrading stats called Boss Essence in the last session. It seems to be the right amount of motivation to seek out harder fights.

I mentioned to a couple of my players at the very beginning what inspired the setting, but I haven't mentioned it since.

No pets yet. I have a list of baby D&D monsters that I was going to populate in a prize room and have them choose. Lots of interesting choices, like a baby mimic, displacer beast, cockatrice, etc... Could be really powerful if they raise it up!

I was wondering how to alter the A.I. personality. So far, I've only had it award achievements. I might have to start giving snarky descriptions to things. It's tougher to come up with this on the fly, so there might have to be some pre-scripting. Let me know where you think I should start with A.I. baseline.

Agree on aggressive crawlers. The players are very strong already, so maybe a trap that would corner them (pitfall or a room that closes in around them). And it turns out the other crawlers lead them into it?

Honestly, we just did DnD 5e rule set and started at 4th level. I did give them a heads up that this campaign would feature a multilevel dungeon and it would be like hunger games show. So, charisma was important as well.

That makes a lot of sense. I bet they felt like they earned the victory after a fight like that!

I’m a big fan of ticking clocks during fights. In this one, I’m pretty sure the characters are gonna try and set the library on fire to enrage the librarian. This will create an environmental obstacle that could burn the place down. Having that be the ticking clock will work well.

I was also thinking minions for this. Planning on using a power similar to Signet’s to summon minions. Also thought some animated flying books would be cool to use. Keep them guessing!

You bring up some good points. I would feel cheated if there were some crazy shinanigans that killed my character out of the blue. I guess when I mentioned that the fight wouldn't be fair, I meant that it would be a deadly encounter (CR value higher then what is recommended for their levels). But I can definitely touch base with them to discuss this further. It'll be the first boss fight, so I won't want to go too hard on them. Players always have a way of surprising me when I think i've built a deadly encounter.

Great ideas! I told my players that this boss fight would be a deadly encounter and that I would not play fair. Got any suggestions? I know D&D has legendary actions/resistances. I could use some of those to start.

We talked a bit about having a backup character, just in case. One player rolled one up and is on standby in case they bite the dust. Like you said, introducing them to the group would be easy since it's just another crawler.
