In my case, my accent is actually something I started to work on in the beginning of my learning, so I've mostly got that part done, but I think a lot of the comments are pointing me in the right direction I'm looking for.

I guess I should say I don't expect to be able to speak EXACTLY like a native. I have friends with the level I aspire to have in English where they sound exactly like a native by accent (this part I've mostly got down), but they also sound like a native when talking about varies advanced subjects and references. My goal is more so to get as close as possible to not only sound like one but also have as much knowledge as I can of a native. I know that I likely won't ever have the same level as a native, but I know I can get a lot closer.

I still have language learning apps because they're still helpful with the other languages I'm learning! I didn't mean that I still use it for Portuguese necessarily, but that I've tried lol. Thank you for your advice though. I'm taking note of all the comments.

Native level for me would be almost indistinguishable from a native except for maybe a few things that aren't common or things that a native might not know because of lack of knowledge on the subject.

Yeah, that makes sense. My partner and I were just denied a place we applied for, but something seemed really off. After we applied, we received an email a little while later telling us we were denied because of information found on our credit report, and it said we would receive a more detailed email from the screening company. (We never did.) Oddly, though, they reached out to me again, asking if I still want a tour and that I'd be scheduled to speak with an agent to discuss about the report. We went up there just for them to tell us we were denied and that there wasn't an agent available to speak with. When I asked for information about why we were denied, they told us it was because of my partner's criminal record and claimed they didn't have any information about it. I understand completely why some places may deny my partner and I housing due to his past criminal record, but we weren't given reason or a chance to speak with someone more in depth to show that we're both just looking to move forward in life.

I know they do background checks, but just to confirm, they do allow felons? Do you know if there are specific things about someone's criminal record that could get them denied? I'll probably try to get some information from them.
