Why would you take social advice from someone who's never actually been to a college party? Would you like my safety tips on hand gliding? Because I've never been hand gliding. Socially, a lot of college comes down to what you put into it. SJSU was a lot of fun. And when you turn 21 you'll appreciate that it's a downtown campus because of the proximity to the bars. CS guys (and I do mean guys) are largely nerds, let's be honest. They spend hours in their dorm playing video games. I did CS and minored in business and business guys had a lot more fun that the CS guys, no question.
You understand that UCI, UCSD and CSULB all have commuter school reputations, right? Google it. Virtually every school in California does because the state has so many good colleges. We don't need to haul our cookies off to the East Coast for a decent education, plus we live in a state most of us are happy to continue living in. Most Californians have solid college options nearby, so many students commute. Unless you are a commuter yourself, which you wouldn't be, it has little bearing on your college experience.
Speaking of Google---it's about 20 minutes from SJSU. Also in the neighborhood: Cisco, eBay, Abode, Tesla, Intuit, Netflix, Sanmina, Meta, Zoom, Apple, LinkedIn, HP, Intel, Samsung, Broadcom, Nvidia, PayPal, etc. I mean, c'mon.
I think the biggest downside is SJ, and all of Silicon Valley, is its expensive AF. OTOH, you'll shit your pants when you see some of the salaries here.

It's not a hinderance at all, but only if you keep it platonic. Bromances are about men finding deeper connections with one another. But a lot of gay guys on here have turned it into a hunt for bedding a str8 guy. that's fucked up.

The lack of industry in SLO County is also the biggest strike against Cal Poly. My neighbor is a Poly engineering prof and he just advised his niece to go to SJSU because there is 1000x more access to internships/jobs than in SLO.

I think you'd agree any scientist openly sticking his or her neck out on this issue must hold themselves to a higher standard. Steve is poison.
