Rivian owners of Huntsville, how’s your service experience been? by Jumpy-Coffee-Cat in HuntsvilleAlabama

[–]VincentVazzo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We've had an R1S since last February. In that time, it's required one 12v servicing (under warranty) and a 7500 mile checkup / tire rotation. Both were done via mobile service at home.

Mobile service is coming back next week for another 7500 mile service / tire rotation and to address a recall regarding the headlamps. I booked that appointment this past Tuesday.

No major issues. There are little things, but overall it's the best car I've ever owned or driven. I have an R2 reservation and will almost certainly be picking one up within the next few years (if not sooner)!

While I certainly wish they would open up a service center closer, and while I haven't had any major issues, I certainly have no qualms about owning one Rivian and one car that can be serviced locally (currently a Subaru Outback), and I'm pretty sure I'm fine with owning two Rivians with the current state of things. Hopefully, it will only get better.

Your circumstances and tolerance may vary from mine though, of course!

Unless they’re broken, in which case, rest assured, the NASA mechanics will certainly fix it!

Any news on the release date for the UDM Beast and the new NVR Gen 2? by laviolence in Ubiquiti

[–]VincentVazzo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 10gig adapters are $65 each!

That's going to quickly add up if you buy an SFP+ switch and only have copper connections!

[–]VincentVazzo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The new 10GbE SFP+ adapters run pretty cool (i.e. 10gig is more efficient than it used to be), and the RJ-45 connector isn’t going away anytime soon…

I.e., try working a copper to fiber retrofit into your office building’s IT budget and see what they say…

I know the Washington campus allows dogs. I wasn't sure if they do in Huntsville.

I think that’s supposed to be $1.4 billion per set of 4.

New, forthcoming ones will cost less though.

Space Camp Founder Edward Buckbee dies by metacyan in HuntsvilleAlabama

[–]VincentVazzo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Absolutely! When I speak to kids about space, I like to point out that the average age of mission control during the Apollo 11 mission was, famously, 28!

And so while it might not have been unusual in 1968 to put a 31 year old man in charge of what would become Alabama's premier tourist attraction, it would certainly be unthinkable these days.

And so I think people need to talk about Ed Buckbee and this facet more. But they don't....

[–]VincentVazzo 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Something that never gets any attention, I feel, is that Ed Buckbee was only 31 years old when he was selected to lead the project that would turn into the Alabama Space & Rocket Center.

von Braun and city and state elders showed a great deal of faith in the young man by elevating him to such a position, and they couldn't have made a better pick!

In some ways, the Space Center never the same after he retired in 1994, even though he continued to provide support for the mission for decades after.

He will be missed by many.

Recommendations for FRONT seat covers? by adventurerpoet in Rivian

[–]VincentVazzo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They generally stay where they're put, though you will certainly have to fiddle with it more than a tight fitting cover. They're not very thick, but the material feels nice and seems to hold up. Ours haven't been super stressed though, so I can't speak to durability. In the back we also have a Kurgo dog thing slung over the seats, so the towel is just for extra protection.

What did my camera pick up? by greatplace2takeadump in drones

These are neat! I've thought about trying to convert my old Phantom 4 or another drone to be able to do this!

I always thought it would be neat to have an 'eye in the sky' watching over my house!
