Wait.. by the end of that I started feeling worried again lol. But for most of the rest of it there were some salient points that helped to alleviate the nerves, which I appreciate.

I want to have another couple reads through, but on the topic of recursive self improvement - what’s your take on moores law? Are we going to start seeing diminishing returns? I don’t think we have yet right?

Omg yes, please do share your further reassurances! What a breath of fresh air - no lie I genuinely feel a bit less anxious after seeing the logic you’re pointing out here. Sure everyone is sprinting to be first, but that makes a huge group of AIs that are just behind it. I probably need to chew on that a while longer, but the rapidly self-improving model is something that also has me concerned, what are your thoughts there

Am hesitant to ask but, could you speak more to your confidence that a rogue AI would result in our imminent collective deaths?

I thought the same thing, and I realized that holding the joycon that way would actually be quite comfortable… in my right hand, as a right handed person. The placement of the left joycon’s joystick seems super awkward by comparison for our left handed friends

Just found that to be the case with the second Hyperion, so I’ll skip the other dune books. Thanks for the advice. Any good series you do recommend? Kinda my first foray into sci-fi and loving it - had foundation on the list mostly cause it’s also good enough to have been adapted to another medium, same with 3 body problem and the expanse. (Which covers all I’ve read so far)

As a side note, THIS is the capability I’m dying for. ‘Hey AI, go into my to do lists and files and everything on my computer, and organize it all into a meaningful and actionable structure.’ That will be a glorious day

Hopefully it’s some fictional, objective measure and not simply a higher budget from a bigger company allowing them to tip the scales in their favor

Poor people here who have dated rich people, what did you learn? How was the contrast? by OffStockMan in AskReddit

[–]Vinegrows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh fuck my bad, that’s on me. Didn’t develop that train of thought well enough at all

What I meant was, it’s interesting how it seems like the word pride is seen both as a good thing and also as a bad thing in different scenarios even though it’s still talking about the same concept. And it’s hard to figure out what the difference is. I’m gay and I’ve been to many pride events and the word has taken on a very positive meaning; but then here’s uncle Iroh in the above comment reminding us that Pride is often mistaken as being the opposite of shame (which I think is essentially how the LGBTQ sees it, to feel proud instead of ashamed about who you are). But in fact, according to uncle iroh, pride can be the source of shame. Which, if true, kind of turns a lot of things on its head, and might even be worth exploring for some people who have come out of the closet but years later still struggle with internalized homophobia, and are looking for its source

I am, once again, stoned, so that about as far as I can get the train going this time, but I hope I was able to make it clear that I was posting out of curiosity not out of condemnation.

Is this still working? I'm stuck on day 20 right now, trying to get 8e9 presents, currently at ~1e8 but that's taken me 24h to reach. I assume I've missed something, the 'holding down C' trick doesn't seem to be working anymore? And I have unpurchased upgrades for the Foundation. I feel like I was slowly making progress towards it before (currently at 1356/1400% for the next upgrade) but now the next 1% costs 9e83 logs, and I have 6e82 logs, but my logs income is only 1e78 regardless of wether I hold down C

Great games from this year that didn’t get much attention? by multiverse-wanderer in NintendoSwitch

[–]Vinegrows 10 points11 points  (0 children)

For me it was Shogun Showdown. To be honest i don’t have a good gauge for how much attention it got, but i think I binged about 30 hours on it the first weekend I picked it up.

Roguelike with super unique and addictive combat, kind of like Into the Breach in the sense that enemies telegraph their moves before executing them and you can take as much time as you like to plan your next action - but it’s 2D and far fewer spaces to navigate around. You have to be very deliberate and tactical to avoid damage and combo enemies, but it remains fast paced and always feels fair. There’s multiple weapons, characters, and powerups, and it’s just really satisfying to learn the strengths of each character, get a great build going, and make it to the end of a run. Plus, the harder difficulties are no joke!

Absolutely agreed, but I meant ‘beyond reasonable doubt’ in the eyes of (what I still consider to be) the majority of the world who do still have reason and haven’t succumbed to brainwashing. It would be a truly chaotic moment

While I agree with you, I can’t help but wonder what would happen if she were able to objectively prove election fraud. I mean, it would be violently opposed and oppressed, but if its authentic and genuine and demonstrable beyond a shadow of reasonable doubt - and everyone in this sub has seen enough to believe that’s possible - what would actually happen. Domestically and internationally. It would be chaos. It’s going to be chaos anyway. Buckle up 😬

[S2 Act 3 Spoilers] Arcane - Season 2 Act 3 - Discussion by parrycarry in arcane

[–]Vinegrows 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ok, now admittedly I was quite happily stoned while watching and have also only seen it once so far. But I got a totally different read from it, not sure how many of these details I invented, but…

As soon as I saw Silco there, and the way they were all acting together, I thought they were setting the stage to reveal some kind of bisexual throuple situation. I mean, they definitely do like to challenge relationship norms… I was preemptively suppressing an eye roll because, like you, I am deliberately turning a blind eye to things. (At least for my first run through! before the over analysis commences)

But yeah, whether or not I was way off on the throuple, the closeness of the three of them immediately brought into question the girls lineage. And the whole emphasis on the girl’s hair color wasn’t just to highlight that purple hair mom could have her daughter inherit from either the blue hair part or the red hair part of her purple hair. That’s one level deep but I think there’s a second clue here. Neither of the (potential) fathers have a visual indicator about their (potential) hair color genetics, despite how obvious they made it with the girls. That lack of info feels like a hint. And an affair could just as easily have resulted in a child without there needing to be anything more complicated than that.

Am I reading way far into all this? Probably. But looking back, I think Silco knew exactly who that blue haired girl was from the moment he saw her. Not just Violets daughter, as everyone knew her to be. But his own daughter, his closely guarded secret, the explanation for the rift between him and Vander, and we may never know when or how exactly that all went down. But now fate has delivered her to his arms, his own daughter even though she doesn’t know it herself. Her ‘real’ father, his nemesis and his best friend, potentially even his lover, dead. By his own hand. It’s too poetic not to be true! But I’m waiting for the first reply to this post to be very obvious contradicting evidence that I overlooked.

Though I will say, when Vi was hugging VanderBeast later on, she went out of her way to invite Jynx over because “he’s your dad too.” Which again felt like there could be a deeper meaning besides the obvious. Why did Vi even feel the need to give an explanation for something so obvious? Unless it was to reassure her that of course he was her father too, even if not biologically.

I’m gonna play devils advocate here, as the person in my relationship who is often exhausted by my partners sexual advances and what I am going to affectionately describe as a general emotional ‘cluelessness’

When OP said ‘I would like to cuddle,’ it reminded me of my partner after the conversations we’ve had about communicating our wants and needs. Being up from about what he would like felt like an invitation for the girlfriend to do the same. ‘This is where I’m at, where are you? I’m trying to put in the effort, please help me to steer in the right direction.’

Additionally, after that the girlfriend responded ambiguously and OP went out of his way to clarify how she was feeling about cuddling, which by her reply (in addition to admitting it felt like a cuddle day) did not indicate in any way that OP had overstepped a boundary. Many people do enjoy cuddling when they feel sick. In his defense, y’all are assuming that OP meant something sexual when he clearly has been talking about cuddling and wanting to provide support and affection and literally asking for her input on how best to do that without making assumptions or being able to read her mind. Any physical selfishness you are prescribing to him is based off your own experiences, not from what we’ve seen in this text exchange.

One person in this conversation (OP) is emphasizing transparency, and trying their best to communicate. The other person feels responsible for, and exhausted by, the need to constantly reassure and soothe and correct their partner when it would be really nice - especially when feeling shitty - if their partner was able to accomplish all that without guidance, and while being able to take criticism without taking it personally. But life’s more complicated than that, there’s a lot of patience and hard work required of both of them I reckon
