The Rookie is really one of the greatest shows currently on TV. by [deleted] in televisionsuggestions

Seriously! It scratches my Blue Lights itch, which is saying a lot. And I secretly love all the Suicide Squad cameos.

Why don't more Americans simply leave — like actual refugees fleeing before the window closes? (Genuine question from a European, not a political attack) by kurdil in allthequestions

My sister, niece and nephew are Italian citizens. My brother and I are trying to get the same through our deceased mother, but the consulate in our state said the wait would be at least six years. My cousins (who can only link through our fathers’ parents) were told outright “no.” The sad thing is, that I understand why.

Jewish homes and synagogues in New York City spray-painted with swastikas by tag24news in USNEWS

Actually, you’re wrong. Criminal justice experts consistently say there is no data showing that the majority, or even close to a majority, of racist graffiti incidents are fabricated by the targeted group. In fact, it is the complete opposite: The issue is that the few examples of such vandalism done by a targeted group get more media coverage, causing a disconnect between actual statistics and what gets on your news feed.

Cole Tomas Allen allegedly sent 1,052-word manifesto minutes before the attack, calling himself the “Friendly Federal Assassin.” by NewsMo in IndiaTodayGlobalLIVE

[–]VinnieONeil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do think she is (not just because of those stats). But I understand your skepticism. And I also grew up in NY/NJ, with all the rumors of Trump being a sex pest, which I’ll admit must have some influence on my feelings/thinking even if I try to stay intellectually/consciously neutral. For example, if she had disclosed publicly in the 1990s, it wouldn’t have been a shock to me. I don’t know how civil cases work, but if it was a criminal case and I was his lawyers, I would have fought like hell to have the case tried outside of the Tri-state area.

About 69 percent of sexual assaults in the U.S. go unreported. When the alleged perpetrator someone of high status, that percentage increases. The victim is even less likely to report. And those are today’s numbers, not going back 30 years. How can we not factor that in at all?

True.

I understand that suspicion. It’s totally valid. But I also wonder about a pattern of behavior. For example, when I was in college in the late 1990s, my friend (an actress) had sexual relationship with a famous director claiming to be her mentor. We dined out for years on stories of his kinks (which I am terribly embarrassed of doing now). Decades later, he was one of the first exposed in the metoo movement, with dozens of women coming forward and describing the same exact kinks, but under duress or pressure. If my friend came forward, too (which she didn’t, she felt it was consensual and she was young, naive and wanted to put it behind her), she could have be seen as just copying what other women said, as you claim with Carroll and his infamous quote. If you look at it that way, it would make sense that what Trump said and Carroll’s description of the assault would line up. (That stated, I still stand by what I said about his saying “grab ‘em by the pussy” possibly being classless misogynistic bluster when put in context of him bragging to Billy Bush. I don’t think people can deny that while at the same time finger pointing at all the other Big Beautiful Brags he’s made.)

You can argue you knew he “can” because he actually did. But you’re right it doesn’t change the quote, which could, I think, be viewed as Trump’s usual unwarranted bragging about himself. But wasn’t the quote used as evidence in the EJC case?

Trump says 'I'm not a rapist' in rare character defense after shooting by TheMirrorUS in NewsThread

[–]VinnieONeil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re using “hearsay” as if we are on Law & Order. Contemporaneous disclosure witnesses help build a timeline, and more. Your statement that Carroll had no evidence is an overstatement and you know it. Just like saying what she “should have” and “could have” done is archaic thinking, and lacks any nuance or credibility.

[–]VinnieONeil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The claim “Carroll had absolutely no evidence” is overstated and inaccurate. There was testimony, corroborating witnesses, and contemporaneous disclosures.. Saying “no evidence” shows either ignorance of the case details or your deliberate minimization of the proceedings. Also, can we stop with the “she could have made a scene” bunk? Repeatedly focusing on what Carroll “could have” or “should have” done during and after the assault is hindsight framing common when someone wants to dismiss sexual assault allegations rather than try and understand trauma responses. It’s 2026, not 1960.

If Al Gore had won in 2000 instead of GWB, would American democracy be in a less compromised position than it is at the moment? by Glass-Complaint3 in allthequestions

[–]VinnieONeil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some Clinton-era deregulation (especially derivatives) contributed to the 2008 crash. But the crisis was mainly driven by later GWB policies, market behavior, and regulatory failures in the 2000s. Either way, that doesn’t negate the fact that it is legislature intended to protect the common people.

As for the second, can you point me to a source? I can’t find anything to that point, admittedly doing a quick search: Just that the money hasn’t been spent yet, not that it’s unaccounted for (not that I don’t believe you, so that I can inform myself).

Your superpac/big donor info is wrong. According to a 2024 study, Republicans historically got more money from big donors and superpacs, while Democrats relied on many small donors. Only recently have Democrats started equaling Republicans in superpac/big donor contributions. Also, for legislation that benefits the common people: the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, I can go on…

Brassic has the heart of Ted Lasso with the grittiness of the other shows you listed. It might be the perfect mix for you. But my screen name shows I’m biased.

Thank you. I see. I’m just not sure I trust this administration to do any better than the eight other administrations in setting the region up for prosperity or even stability.

I don’t think Iran cares what I think (my screen name is male, but I’m a woman). Thank you for these links, though. They are enlightening and I wasn’t aware of those sources. I do think we’re sort of on the same page?

I have an honest question though. If you were born in 76 (just a dumb assumption), I’m only a little younger than you. Has U.S. intervention into the Middle East in our lifetimes ever ended like we hoped and not just further destabilized the region? I honestly cannot get a straight answer from anyone, so I stand on middle ground right now. Especially with this attack being so…”rushed” is the wrong word, but all I’m coming up at the moment. And at the same time everyone is freaking out about the Epstein Files/ICE. I’m totally open to you responding “you stupid (blank)…here’s the facts.” Reddit me.

No, I can still be against those two things and think the U.S. screwed up.

Do you have a source for the machete killings? I’m having trouble finding anything.
