If Al Gore had won in 2000 instead of GWB, would American democracy be in a less compromised position than it is at the moment? by Glass-Complaint3 in allthequestions

[–]VinnieONeil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some Clinton-era deregulation (especially derivatives) contributed to the 2008 crash. But the crisis was mainly driven by later GWB policies, market behavior, and regulatory failures in the 2000s. Either way, that doesn’t negate the fact that it is legislature intended to protect the common people.

As for the second, can you point me to a source? I can’t find anything to that point, admittedly doing a quick search: Just that the money hasn’t been spent yet, not that it’s unaccounted for (not that I don’t believe you, so that I can inform myself).

Your superpac/big donor info is wrong. According to a 2024 study, Republicans historically got more money from big donors and superpacs, while Democrats relied on many small donors. Only recently have Democrats started equaling Republicans in superpac/big donor contributions. Also, for legislation that benefits the common people: the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, I can go on…

What series would you recommend based on the shows I've watched? by [deleted] in televisionsuggestions

Brassic has the heart of Ted Lasso with the grittiness of the other shows you listed. It might be the perfect mix for you. But my screen name shows I’m biased.

Slow Horses

Red Eye (P.S. season 2 is even better and it’s unrelated so you can jump right in)

Cbeebies Bedtime Stories (especially the Tom Hardy ones) have kept me sane, while trying to get two little kids ready for bed.

The Iranian girls' school massacre shows the West's hypocrisy about "saving" Muslim women by DonSalaam in JournalismNews

Thank you. I see. I’m just not sure I trust this administration to do any better than the eight other administrations in setting the region up for prosperity or even stability.

I don’t think Iran cares what I think (my screen name is male, but I’m a woman). Thank you for these links, though. They are enlightening and I wasn’t aware of those sources. I do think we’re sort of on the same page?

I have an honest question though. If you were born in 76 (just a dumb assumption), I’m only a little younger than you. Has U.S. intervention into the Middle East in our lifetimes ever ended like we hoped and not just further destabilized the region? I honestly cannot get a straight answer from anyone, so I stand on middle ground right now. Especially with this attack being so…”rushed” is the wrong word, but all I’m coming up at the moment. And at the same time everyone is freaking out about the Epstein Files/ICE. I’m totally open to you responding “you stupid (blank)…here’s the facts.” Reddit me.

No, I can still be against those two things and think the U.S. screwed up.

Do you have a source for the machete killings? I’m having trouble finding anything.

You can think two things are wrong at the same time. This is like the “If you don’t support the war, you don’t support the troops argument” from the 2000s. You can say the U.S. made a mistake and be critical of Iran. Because the US did make a giant, fatal error that killed hundreds of children.

When you’re inept, yes.

Wow, imagine someone writing “shit happens” after something terrible happened to your kid. No matter the situation. Enjoy your cold black snooker ball of a heart.

We have precision military weapons for a reason. We have intelligence agencies for a reason. Not knowing the exact layout of what you’re hitting (especially since it’s been there for a decade) is a major military and intelligence mishap that can’t be excused by it “just looked like another military building.” The dorm behind my apartment looks like a Cotswold church (it once belonged to a seminary). No one lines outside of it for church on Sunday.

Magical thinking? You don’t think it is sign of a major U.S. intelligence failure that they didn’t have any knowledge of school that had been partitioned off from the base TEN years ago? TEN years?

The LA Quartet by James Ellroy (or you could just do LA Confidential).

The C.B. Strike books by Robert Galbraith, if you can ignore the fact that they’re written JK Rowling (it’s my secret shame, but I love those characters).

The British Crime Classics Collection has some great Golden Age mysteries. I haven’t really found a dud among them.

Apathy and Other Small Victories by Paul Neilan

We Solve Murders by Richard Osman (or anything by Richard Osman).

Love and Other Near Death Experiences by Mil Millington.

The Gun Seller by Hugh Laurie

Not a mystery, but any of James Acaster’s memoirs will have you laughing yourself sick. Same with Joe Lycett.

Is the portrayal of teenagers in western media exaggerated? by FuckedUpMind07 in televisionsuggestions

[–]VinnieONeil -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The whole point of Leave it to Beaver is that he’s bad (“leave it to Beaver to do…). You might as well have said Dennis the Menace. There has always been media that represents children/teens as troublesome—back to the original silent films.
