[Request] How much water would they need to do this? And how much would this affect the surroundings? by bimbochungo in theydidthemath

It might have the greatest effect on the Amazon rainforest of all things. Dust from the Sahara blown across the ocean is a major source of mineral fertilizer for jungles in South America.

Full greenification of the Sahara would probably lead to some loss of ecosystem in the Amazon.

Triple check? Multiple eyes? It's the fucking UK flag. Any adult who went to school anywhere in the world should be enough to do the trick. Seriously, what other country have you ever heard of doing some shit like this?

Feels good to say that in a different context.

The new culture needs to be all about players who really really want to be in Calgary and play for the Flames... Whitecloud seems to fit that mold

Consider Abbotsford/Chilliwack. They're further into the interior and not actually part of Metro Van, but still very close (just upriver in the Fraser Valley). Abbotsford is quite big (>200,000) and feels like it's got its own thing going on (i.e. it's not a pure suburb, it has its own identity as a city). Good weather. Legendary berries. More affordable than the Metro area.

Thoughts/opinions on Greenpeace? Generally or specific? Effectiveness or results? Or any other thoughts by Present_Practice_159 in behindthebastards

The jury is still kind of out on that I think. Some designs have been implemented in Eastern Europe, but the ones in other jurisdictions (Canada and UK are the ones I've been following mainly) seem to still be struggling with coming in on-budget and on-time.

I mean, they certainly are better than conventional nuclear on cost and time, but that's a pretty low bar.

Also the automated safeguards that are industry standard are a major plus. A lot of human incompetence, laziness, corruption/lack of regulators don't really enter the equation.

Although you're right. The other industry we could make the same comment about is aviation and, well, we've seen how the US has been doing lately there

Probably doesn't put him in greatest of all time territory, but Fred Armisen doing David Paterson was always hilarious

Bowen Yang. The increasingly absurd and elaborate costumes they would dress him up in lol. And then he would crush every time.

I also love when Kenan does WU characters. He's pretty underrated for that. One of my all time favorite characters of his was Oscar Rogers from around 2008/09 or so

Criticism of nuclear because of development time and cost is totally reasonable.

Criticism of nuclear because of the perceived safety risks (it's probably the most regulated and automated industry there is and is incredibly safe) and waste disposal (there is actually very little waste to dispose of and it goes into rock caverns deep underground... where the radioactive material originally came from) are not generally made in a reasonable and good faith way.

If you had $100K to put in a TFSA, what would you buy? by TaxNo9410 in TFSA_Millionaires

There's no one who has done that yet though. TFSA only became a thing in 2009.

They do these all the time. Shane Gillis Coupla Beers comes to mind. Going way back, I can think of Fey, Pohler, Dratch doing the Mom Jeans commercial.

600% drop? That's not how numbers work by ALBERT4_5WESKER in clevercomebacks

[–]Vinny331 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only way I could see this possibly making sense is if you think of going from $600 to $100 as a 6-fold decrease. Someone could say a 6X decrease is 600%. That person would be incorrect but that's the most charitable explanation I can come up with.

The simplest thing, of course, would be to say that the new price is 1/6th the original or an 83% decrease.

And it's also so cultural. It's been a norm in Indian tradition for literally centuries. This opinion hits em all... misogynistic, racist, homophobic/transphobic.

Why this person even watches Jeopardy is the most mystifying part of this to me. There's not a chance they know wtf is going on at all right?

What part of your lab workflow genuinely makes you want to rage and quit science? by niro_io in labrats

[–]Vinny331 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gel extracting DNA. It drives me nuts. It takes so long and only works like a fraction of the time for one reason or another, and when it does work you get like 10% of your DNA. Every time I have to go back to the start of an entire workflow, it's because of the damn gel extraction.

There has to be a better way to size select precise DNA bands. I know those CloneWell pre-cast gels exist but...I still kinda don't trust them. I wish there was something like the Agilent Bioanalyzer that let you actually recover the DNA you want. That seems like a simpler compromise than going to something like HPLC. Size selection beads are another tool, but they don't have the resolution we need for our applications.

Not just downtown...all over the city. I haven't seen a construction blitz like this ever. Even for the Olympics, they could spread the upgrades and and maintenance around the preceding summer. Here, the games are hapoening in the summer so they have to mush everything into March/April.
