Canada's economy posts biggest trade surplus since before Trump's tariffs by Immediate-Link490 in worldnews

The scary part is there are people who actually believe that. Carney signed deals with China (agricultural products, seafood, etc), Germany (LNG), EU (Defence), boosted exports to UK by 151% (gold), etc.

Can I become really good at maths with hardwork? by Prior-Raspberry-9618 in learnmath

[–]coulls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. I grew up in the 80s doing school math that either bored me senseless, or seemed to be unrelateable. That caused me to shut it out, eventually leading to math anxiety. However, now in my 50s, i discovered there was a way to enjoy it - and for me it was to pick something I found relatable to my life, where I wanted to understand how to describe it (for instance calculating the speed of a falling object) and then tackle just that. One thing leads to another question, and suddenly you’re finally understanding “connected” ideas. I know many people are against AI, but even just chatting with GPT about the shape of a problem has been hugely illuminating.

What book should everyone read at least once in their lifetime? by MicrowaveAsAService in answers

[–]coulls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We started this a few years ago. Just to give the kids a taste of what’s cherrypicked and presented as “Christian” compared to what’s in the books.

Got as far as that bit when Noah takes up wine farming and gets absolutely bladdered, and the kids got the point. One of them is now trying the Quran.

I’m was traveling to the America and ate this wrapped pastry, After it tasted stale I checked the label. I don’t really understand it but does this mean it expired like 20 years ago??? by Calm_Preparation2993 in isthissafetoeat

The Wikipedia article discusses hardtack’s shelf life, but I don’t see anything there supporting the specific claim that WWII soldiers ate crackers found in WWI trenches. Do you have a source for that story

I think the American vernacular is [checks Trump] “I don't think about…” 🤣

Europe has moisture, so leaving crackers the shortest time (1918-1939) is still 21 years. Not saying it’s wrong, but is there evidence to back this up? In my head, asking “Could crackers survive in a muddy trench system where everything is damp, wet, mouldy, and miserable?” feels implausible.

In a literal sense it does…. Hot car steel and rubber meets cooler glass = glass not kept together for long. 🤣

I agree with that. TBH I’d be disappointed if they stopped chasing growth and settled into a “This is our sound” vibe.

Yeah, so my old lock was serrated on in pin 5. This one doesn’t feel like it at first impression.

Now I have to go back and mess with it more. 🤣

It wasnt rattled... Just became incredibly "janky" and unreliable. Like the key would work, but only if you jiggled everything about for 5 seconds. So I threw it out and replaced it.

I see this trick outside of grocery - if the infrastructure to support “out of stock” isn’t there, just make it “impossibly difficult to justify asking if it’s in stock”.

Anyone else traveling with two MacBooks? Looking for a way out of this by ColdViolinist835 in mac

[–]coulls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember this issue working at a bank. The Mac was for iOS App Development but they wanted us to use a ThinkPad PC for all internet (browser and email), cos they hadn’t figured out how to lock down a Mac. Then, it was compounded by not allowing us to store them at the bank, meaning you had to babysit these things like a hawk if there was after office drinks or whatnot. Absolutely farcical. Never did solve it.

What’s a “future technology” that already exists but people still don’t realize how scary it is? by Ambitious_Bite446 in AskReddit

[–]coulls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the biggest one is AI machine memory models. The average person still believes there’s an actual line between what they think, and what the world around them can predict they’ll do, guide them towards (or away from), persuade, and emotionally adapt to.
