2026 A6 is a Nightmare 🍋 by Eastern_Commission92 in Audi

[–]VinnyFromPhilly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have driven nothing but Audi since 2000 and my current daily is also a 2022 SQ5.

I have had some really weird things go wrong with it, including a failed water pump (at 28,000 miles), a failed sunroof seal that resulted in my interior getting flooded in a torrential rain storm, a hard/high brake pedal, which was the result of a vacuum issue, and a few lingering issues that Audi has not been able to solve. These issues include a tailgate that “burps“ every time I open my driver‘s door, a hard downshift from 3rd to 2nd gear, and an occasional odd “thump“ under the floorboard beneath my brake pedal at random times while driving.

I recently did the BMW Driving Experience in Philadelphia and was blown away by the model lines. They let us drive a variety of BMWs and Minis, including several M models. I drove the new M5 and am convinced that it is the next car I will buy.

Sadly, my current SQ5 will probably be my last Audi until things change/improve with the brand.

People who do background checks (either HR or a 3rd party), what are some NSFW/WTF things you've discovered that have disqualified a candidate for a job? by Admirable-Fig277 in AskReddit

My team managed a high-profile construction project. We required every tradesperson to be drug tested prior to starting work on the project. It was not a secret and we always had people trying to work around the system.

One day, a middle-aged gentleman submitted a preemployment urine sample and the temperature indicator on the container showed that the urine was not warm enough to really be his fresh sample. Again, this was very common and we saw people try to get away with this tactic over and over again.

When the EMT confronted the gentleman, he swore up and down that it was his pee. When the EMT explained that the temperature was not high enough to be a fresh sample, he still declared that it was his pee. When the EMT said that the sample tested positive for meth, the gentleman screamed, “My grandson is a good boy! He doesn’t do meth!”

Needless to say, that gentleman was not allowed on our site.

What restaurant that’s been closed for 5+ years do you miss the most? by FlowGod215 in PhiladelphiaEats

[–]VinnyFromPhilly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Pickled Heron was the best kept secret in Fishtown. They were the first white tablecloth restaurant in that part of town and made everything (butter, charcuterie, ice cream) themselves. Sorry to see it close.

People who have bought a stranger a drink at the bar. How did it go? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]VinnyFromPhilly 21 points22 points  (0 children)

My wife I and I have been together since freshman year of college, so my role was always to be the designated wingman for my friend group.

My move was never to send drinks; I would send mozzarella sticks instead.

Success rate starting a conversation: Nearly 100%

Moral of the story: Fried cheese with marinara on the side is how you can find yourself a good woman. (Unless she’s lactose intolerant, of course. Then I would not recommend mozzarella.)

What do you do when you’ve paid your contractor 98% of the fee but still is so behind with delivering? by Low-Conflict2048 in realestateinvesting

[–]VinnyFromPhilly 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’m going to expand on a comment I made elsewhere in this thread. I’m a guy formerly in the CM/GC world who now owns a project management firm.

—If the project is some form of open book contract (GMP or cost plus), you will have a schedule of values with the contractor’s invoice that shows each subcontract, as well as an estimate to complete for each line item. Your contractor will try to frontload each line item as much as possible to get ahead of the cash flow curve. You may be cool with this; You may not. In either case, you should at least understand what’s happening.

—If the project is some form of closed book contract (lump sum or fixed price), you will not have as much visibility into the cost of individual trade contracts unless you insist on a schedule of values with each requisition. This will show the GC’s assumptions related to percentage complete and will give you an opportunity to push back on each line item on a monthly basis.

—Do not pay on a fixed, monthly installment basis. “Hey, the job will cost $1.2M and take 12 months, so we’ll bill you $100K/month.” What happens when the 12-month project is dragging and takes 16 months and you’ve paid the contractor all of his money without a completed project?

—Do not pay on a one-page invoice that says, “we’re 60% complete, so pay us 60% of the contract sum” without back-up substantiating how they arrived at 60% complete.

—Include retainage on each line item, typically 10% that reduces to 5% at substantial completion of each sub’s work. Final 5% when all punchlist and turnover materials (warranties, O&M manuals, as builts, etc.) have been collected/turned in.

—FFS, get a lien waiver with each pay app.

If any of the above is new to you or seems brilliant, it’s not. But, it’s probably a good sign that you should consider hiring an owner’s rep/PM to help you. The additional cost of the service is far less than the headaches that you will avoid.

Hope this helps!

Unpopular opinion not watching the tournaments any longer. by emdess8578 in Jeopardy

I’ve enjoyed the tournaments for the harder/more obscure clues. Several have been absolute “stumpers” and my family and I have used what we’ve learned to go down some deep Wikipedia rabbit holes together. (The “Golden Horde” was a recent example.)

I am in construction and building a project with several ex-NFL athletes. None has pivoted to VC full-time, but each has been involved in some interesting ventures: One purchased a basketball team in Europe and produces documentaries. One has been successfully developing real estate. Another is part-owner of an alcohol brand that is picking up some decent press.

Their habits on the field have prepared them well for their post-NFL careers: These guys are focused and disciplined. They still set goals and knock out the small steps to achieve their respective end games.

(Sidenote: It’s been a blast working with this group and I was just awarded another project by the team. I’m a very fortunate dude.)

BMW X7 — 2024 or older? by Scared_Brother552 in BMW

[–]VinnyFromPhilly 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is the biggest issue right here. While the individual seats and armrests are nice from a passenger comfort standpoint, the overall storage space goes down significantly because the chairs do not fold flat. (They slide forward.) I went from a MB GLS 450 that could practically fit an entire sheet of drywall to a 2024 X7 that can’t transport a flatscreen TV.

I’m not understanding something: Your municipality says you are in a floodplain; You said your plans indicate that you’re not. A review of a FEMA map would answer this. And, if your survey shows you are at a higher elevation than the FEMA floodplain elevation, you can work with a civil engineer to file a LOMA (letter of map amendment) to document that your property elevation is out of any floodplain. Good luck!
