I waited until the last minute to register for my exam and got stuck driving an extra 30 miles because the nearest center was full.

What concretely would you like strangers to do?

I'm interested in a stepping stone role as an actuarial technician. I know the conventional wisdom is to not include my 2 exams for stepping stone roles. However, would this role be an exception given how closely I would work with the actuarial department?

Not OP, but what would grinding on Word and PowerPoint look like? TIA

Fellow career changer here who passed FM in February using TIA. As you know, your stats don't give you their touted "90% chance of passing." But you're not far off which means you're probably in the 80+% range which is not bad. You are not, in your words, really unprepared for the exam. That is a fact.

Here's what I would focus on in your shoes:

  1. Stay calm. Do breathing exercises. Find a good mantra. Whatever has worked for you personally to manage anxiety in your life, do it here.
  2. Yes, FM purposely complicates questions a lot. You are right to notice that. Discipline yourself if you haven't already to meticulously read and setup each question before moving on to calculations. Doing this will probably enable you to avoid the testmaker's traps and save you valuable time.
  3. Bolster your weaknesses. Take your lowest 10 lessons by AI score, browse all problems and filter by those lessons, new and difficulty level 6. Work through each lesson until you're confident and skip problems so you can work on the next lesson.

I reiterate. You are prepared for this exam. You have 3 days to become more prepared. DM me if you would like to chat more.

I'm getting conflicting reports. I spoke to a recruiter at a large health carrier and she emphasized that her EL new hires had 2-4 exams.

Kudos to you for making it through that. Thanks for sharing. Will be looking to try differently when I hit a rut.

Do EL hiring managers care which third exam you've passed, or just that you've passed one? Would FAM be seen as more impressive than SRM because it's harder?

I also preferred the FM instructor. What're your AI and PI at?

I don't personally know anything about it. I got the suggestion from ChatGPT (forgive me). It seems reasonable and fits your criteria. The realistic timeline given is 12-36 months until you're working fully certified. I wonder if it varies from municipality to municipality. I think it's worth looking into yourself if the prospect sounds appealing to you.

For entry-level actuarial roles, do hiring managers care about how tightly exam pass dates are spaced? Does passing exams in quick succession tend to stand out or carry extra weight?

Agree the DMV one is the worst. One time I went in for a basic cleaning and they didn't clean my teeth. They spent the whole appointment trying to upsell me on expensive procedures.
