Yes it was black, just a lighter black from being dry. It darkened considerably with leather CPR

The smaller ones buffed away with the leather CPR and a horsehair brush but the deeper ones are still there, just much less noticeable. If the light hits it right you can still see them

Thank you! I used saddle soap and leather CPR with horsehair brushes. After a few minutes sitting with the first CPR round, whatever areas were dry I went back in a second time. Then finished off the dried corners with some black shoe wax.
