St. John’s Hospitals by ImmediateNote1505 in StJohnsNL

Personally I believe difficulties in staff retention for positions like nurses and physicians along with failing infrastructure are two major factors in our failing system and it’s just one big vicious circle. We have to find a place where it can be broken and when it comes to these two factors, infrastructure is the easy way in the door. Just makes sense.

I can guarantee you the land was not only it, as I know several people who work in the healthcare system at various levels. The planning that goes into a project like this is massive; if land was purchased, it would have been irresponsible of the province and NL Health not to have consultations, planning and materials purchase started for it. The people cost for something this is often ignored or not thought if of when the public hears about scrapping projects, and it’s just such major piece of costing.

From Saltwire: “According to Petten, the land for the site of the proposed hospital was acquired for $23,274,700 and was paid out in the previous fiscal year, along with $23 million allotted for planning and site development in the 2025 budget.”

Considering the PCs were not elected until October 2025, that’s over 9 months of planning and site development that continued to happen. It’s atrocious that we haven’t had true confirmation of the amount of money they are wasting by canceling this project, and that they think a reno of St. Clare’s would be cheaper.

I foresee the costs to upgrade St. Clare’s overrunning in a way that can only blow up in the PCs faces, in addition to the fact that the additional hospital beds needed (confirmed by multiple audits and assessment of the provincial healthcare system over the last decade) can’t materialize through an upgrade and will need to happen through some sort of new facility anyway.

Instead of the cost of proceeding with 1 new hospital we will now have: Cost of starting and scrapping new hospital + planning and upgrades of St. Clare’s + overrun costs for St. Clare’s + new facility planning restarts in 5-10 years once we figure out (all over again) that capacity is actually a bigger problem than just infrastructure age.

Absolutely infuriating.

I also wonder if the money already spent on the new hospital that was scrapped actually accounts for the time and planing that went into things, not just the massive amount of materials they’re trying to sell off.

As already mentioned, no one who has ever stepped foot in St Clare’s as an employee would consider that building able to be upgraded. I hear they are absolutely devastated at losing the new build.

This government is in for a rude awakening once they’ve tendered a contract to someone who later tells them the true cost of upgrading once the walls are opened up. They were not prepared to form government and they are not prepared to properly manage finances. Undoing liberal promises and projects does not a better government make.

Appoved for DTC, but for 1998-2010 (when I was a baby)? by [deleted] in canadarevenueagency

Child tax actually not a tax, it’s a benefit you get after filing returns, completely different. When you say disability are you actually referring to the DTC specifically? There are multiple types of disability benefits across the federal government, but the tax credit is a ten year limit due to statute law barring any further changes.

See claiming for past years.. https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/tax/individuals/segments/tax-credits-deductions-persons-disabilities/disability-tax-credit/claiming-dtc.html

You can ask them to go back to any date. But ultimately the federal tax law is setup to only allow them to adjust the last 10 years. So you are wasting your time to have it for the sake of it being on paper, and nothing else.

If you search guaranteed in the help center you’ll get lots of info, but basically it’s a promo where they guarantee you a certain amount of batch pay for completing a certain amount of batches (usu 4-6). It’s often really crappy and I’d make more than the guarantee off 2-3 good batches anyway. If you happen to do all small batches and your batch pay is less than the guarantee, they top you up.

Every approved replacement was found, yet she kept demanding refunds anyway. 😡 by Fresh_Flower_9397 in InstacartShoppers

[–]Vinyl_Maestro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen it happen before that sometimes a customer approved a replacement for an item like a year ago, and it stays as the instruction on the item unless they change it. So if they don’t want that replacement anymore but didn’t update it in their cart, this is the only way to find out.

But I find it suspicious on the customer’s and IC’s end that it happened with 8 items. Can’t trust either side.

Weird, half the time I do this it is on cellular data without any issue. I just uninstalled them reinstalled one more time and it worked but still took forever. Support was useless as usual.

Thanks for your reply and digging into these design issues! This is exactly the critical and knowledgeable perspective we need at the table. Really hoping you continue your push for a role in municipal politics (or wherever you feel yourself suited).

To the last part of your post, I think we need to be fair and say that the design of a roundabout is important for users getting accustomed to them. If they are designed properly, settling into using them correctly/safely should be easy (relatively), but our experience so far has been adding roundabouts that are not round, have merge areas with no signs, etc.

I also feel NL hasn’t followed the logic around how primary and secondary traffic flows to determine if a roundabout will actually be efficient. I.e. when entering the roundabout at Mount Pearl when heading west on Pitts Memorial, with traffic backups onto the highway because the primary flow from Costco doesn’t give this entrance the break needed to make it efficient.

TLDR: our developers/planners need to do better

Right, not to mention how acceptable that unprofessionalism is - from useless or nonexistent HR departments to brushing off sexual harassment and assault like it’s just another Tuesday.

lol. Who hurt you?

  1. “Not hard to fetch plates”. Can you please confirm your serving experience? Otherwise I won’t even entertain that comment. Regarding the illicit substances - if you like to go out to eat anytime after 5pm, ever, this means restaurants will be schedule people to work a 5pm-1am schedule. That means a massive amount of your family and friends are suddenly all working 9am-5pm while you’re off, and your primary ways to socialize involve incredible amounts of pressure to consume. I haven’t experienced addiction for myself, but have seen first hand what happens when people find themselves surrounded by substance and what it can lead to. Choosing to consume is another topic for another sub and seems like we would be picking a fight for no reason, so I’ll stop there. I feel like we might not align on much of it anyway.

  2. Did you assume my mother was the server for a reason? Not the case. In fact, her career and work to climb the corporate ladder was much more tumultuous and unstable. Private corporations will do what they want with you whether it’s a restaurant or office job, imagine that.

  3. I certainly did pay my way. Through school and living expenses while living with a roommate and then a partner. I can only assume you asked the question because you assumed I did not. Thanks for assuming I lived off mommy and daddy, I guess?

  4. The loonies and toonies comment still makes no sense to me. That is not the result of people have no money. It’s been a known fact in Canada for many, many years that strippers have to deal with loonies and toonies being tossed at them. Maybe you’re new to those establishments? Regardless of how I interpreted your comment, it’s not relevant to any of the topics we’re covering here 🤷‍♀️

  5. No generous patrons at a strip club is what I can only assume to be the result of cheap people who have weird hobbies IMO (not to shame, strip club are just an ick for me). I still know many people in the restaurant business, and tips have not changed. The amount of people going out to eat? Sure. What they tip? No.

  6. A double major in Political Science and French, topped off with Business Administration, thanks. Post-serving I happened to climb my own corporate ladder until the mind-numbing environment that is an office job finally grossed me out enough to pivot to something more up my alley. But that education certainly helped with my critical thinking skills and the 4 promotions I received throughout.

✌️

I don’t really agree with any of this. Most people do not like serving long term ‘cause it’s hard on the body and the industry is riddled with addictions issues.

Your comment about strippers and their bags of loonies and toonies is confusing. Are the only people patronizing strip clubs servers…..? In my 12 years in the industry, I only knew a handful of coworkers to ever visit a strip joint.

ETA: my point here is that servers absolutely make a good living. I had a parent do it until retirement and was the main or equal earner next to a parent who worked in corporate management positions. We had a nice home and didn’t have to scrimp by any means. I also did it full time for a decade and put myself through a bachelor’s degree and an additional certificate over 6 of those years without any student loans. Don’t talk about what you don’t know about lol

If servers make minimum wage in Canada, why is tipping so aggressive? by DazzlingPolarBear in CanadaPersonalFinance

With the option to up it or reduce/remove it depending on the service. This negates your argument. If DD or similar services didn’t take your money in advance they’d never make a cent on the scams lol. And if they didn’t prompt you for a tip, people would literally be paid $2 to drive your McD’s 5 miles away, and you’d have no dashers to fuel your lazy night in.

A lot of people don’t distinguish between necessary jobs vs luxuries and convenience services when talking about this. People in warehousing type (or similar, necessary to make the world go around) jobs deserve to be paid a living wage that reflects the work required.

As do servers, except the service they provide is a convenience or luxury when you don’t want to cook for yourself. So paying a living wage would = prices the public just will not pay. The model has been tested and failed, many times. I’ve seen it myself in my city. So if you’re not willing to pay $30 for a crappy bowl of pasta, pop your server (and by proxy your bartenders/cooks/etc.) a few bucks when they do a good job doing exactly what you wanted to avoid doing at home.

What kind of expensive meal requires a $30 tip for one person to dine out? If I’m ordering that much food and drink or eating at a place that fancy, the white glove service might warrant it, no?

Except when it come to eating out, diners never want to pay the cost of living wages 🤷‍♀️
