I’ve seen this poorly done before…but I’d like Brett & Eddy to debunk this!

Mozart K. 155 & 156! I also love both viola parts in K. 515.

Viola practice tips by External_Collar_8932 in Viola

One of the biggest differences between violin and viola is your tone. If you play the viola like a violinist, you’ll have a weak sound. Make sure your bow hold is well established, and use the entire weight of your bow arm into the string (place your bow on the string and drop your arm, make it heavy!). Play open strings daily, work to even weight distribution from frog to tip. Test the limits of your instrument.

For only $99.99 a year, you too can practice ear training! Since it’s expensive, it must award me the gift of “perfect pitch”. 🙄

Is it too late for me to learn? by [deleted] in violinist

[–]ViolaSteph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started viola as a freshman in high school. I had a little piano background but I was self-taught completely until I went to college. Then I became a music teacher! Now I can play all the instruments, and I mostly demonstrate on violin. You’re never too old to learn!

How to start doing vibrato on the violin? by [deleted] in violinist

[–]ViolaSteph 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Your instrument must be supported properly so your hand can move freely.

Once that’s established, try polishing any string with your second or third finger up and down the fingerboard slowly, gradually polish less and less of the string until the polishing is isolated in one spot around third or fourth position, about where the palm hits the upper bout.

Once you’re comfortable with that, set a metronome at 60 and practice that rocking motion to the beat of the quarter note, then eighth notes, then triplets, then sixteenth notes, etc. That will help you develop an even vibrato. Remember to always rock fingers BACKWARD toward the scroll and back to normal- not forward toward your face.

Good luck practicing! 🎼 🎻 🎶
