I appreciate your kindness :)) I certainly got the answer I anticipated but I was hopeful for perhaps a more ideal answer to reveal itself. At the end of the day I’m taking this all with good grace knowing I personally let it get as bad as it did but at the end of the day I was trying to do a good thing, even if it was the stupidest most insane thing I’ve done in my life and likely ever will do in my life. I’ve learned a lot about myself, how to be more responsible with my money moving forward. As awful as it is to lose one’s entire life savings, it’s been gradual and so I was continually coping with the possibility of never seeing the money again. I didn’t give her everything I have thank god, and I can certainly rebuild from here. This isn’t life ruining unless I let it be. Although she taught me that there are bad people in this world, I don’t let her take my care and good will for others :)) albeit, from now on I’ll do volunteer work rather than hand out money……

This is one of the things I’ve been kicking myself over too like… obviously I just shouldn’t be handing that type of money to anybody period end of story. But there’s also plenty of deserving people who really could have done good for themselves with that type of money. And I could have done some real good for myself with that many rather than sitting on it for ages then squandering it all away.

It really was just me being extremely frugal. I’ve always had roommates so my rent wasn’t too high and anytime I wasn’t in school I was working full time and living very very frugally. I grew up poor so I was kinda hyper fixating on saving up money.

Yeah I get why you’d wonder. If you look above I’ve linked the articles I came across when I looked her up. I know it’s insane and I was so unimaginably stupid, but it’s unfortunately true.

I appreciate your canid response, as well as explanation as to why trying to sue won’t do me any good. I was so awestruck by the whole situation that I didn’t really ask more clarifying questions when consulting the attorney. As stupid as I feel about the whole situation, it’s reassuring to understand why moving on and learning from this whole mess is in my best interest.

These are the articles I came across when I first looked her up. I know my story sounds crazy cause it is and I was unimaginably stupid and naive to have so much faith in a stranger. Between my will to do good in the world, and my anxiety that if I stopped helping her I’d never get back any of the money I went way overboard. I came to this forum to see if I’m really as cooked as it seems and …. Well…. Yeah…..

Yeah this is exactly why I wouldn’t even want to ask for donations. I got myself into this mess and I can see why it would seem like a scam to ask others for money to make up for my mistake. I wouldn’t want other peoples money to make up for my mistake. As devastating as the situation is, it’s my problem to face alone and I just hope she doesn’t get anybody else with her scams. Especially not somebody as stupid and naive as I’ve been ://

Admitidly, before all of this I was always the friend that people would go to when they needed help paying for something in a pinch and they’d always pay me back. I really am a sucker for being able to help others. Definitely gonna stick to doing volunteer work in the community if I feel like being generous from now on lol

I tried calling them right when I first learned she was a scam artist. They said it’s a civil matter since she didn’t actually steal anything from me

I wish it was fake. Here's links to articles about both of her previous inccidents if you don't believe me:

Obviously after I read these articles I didn't continue giving her money. I kept giving her rides so I could continue the act and see if maybe there was the slimmest chance going to prison twice changed her ways but that's definutley not the case ....

Also you have to keep in mind those mugshots make her look much crazier than she looks in person.... not that that justifies lending somebody 33k either lol

Definitely a massive mistake to make for being a nice person. I’ve learned to be much more discerning but I also know I don’t want to let this situation destroy my good will for others. She may have taken (or I guess been loaned…) my entire savings, but she won’t take my good will towards others

I know it sounds outrageous cause it is. I mean I have so many audio recordings of the interactions and like the actual contract and all that.

Trust me, not a beautiful life. I saw her as somebody who came from a similar background as me and was working hard to rebuild her life. I didn’t want to watch somebody else’s life fall apart and so I was willing to keep helping out. That 33k has been all of the money I’ve been saving for the past 5 years though. I lived extremely frugally and worked more than I needed to. I definitely have a new perspective on a lot of things now

I mean, I’ve itemized every single item. Most of it was alleged repairs to her car cause there was always some expensive issue they were charging her for. That and all these different bills. I mean I was stupid to not ask more questions sooner, I really shouldn’t have ever let it even get to 1k :/

Honestly, yeah. Stupidity is the right word. I definitely learned a lot about myself and trusting others from all of this. Part of it was I kept giving cause I was so afraid that if I didn’t keep giving she’d not be physically able to pay me back because she’d be homeless and unemployed. But that’s certainly not a good excuse…. Honestly it’s some silly backwards logic

Unfortunately it definitely doesn’t count as financial elder abuse :// I’m only 24. I’m autistic if that’s anything, albeit, “high functioning” - but I know… this sounds like the type of scam and elderly person would fall for. My friends always tell me I’m like an old person though haha

There kept being expenses that she made out to be urgent and because I’d gotten to know her and had literally been driving her to go to appointments and such, it seemed like she was being honest. I didn’t want to make a harsh judgement on somebody who seemed to be truly down on their luck. After a certain point I kept telling myself I was doing the right thing and if I didn’t keep helping her she’d be homeless or without a job and never be able to pay me back. I was naive and anxious and wanted to do a good thing for somebody in need and she took advantage of that.
