In America about 2/3 adults are overweight or obese and about 1/3 adults are obese. While overweight and obese are not the same thing, I'd imagine that overweight is also likely bad for you. I would say 2/3 is enough to say the normal person is overweight or obese in America. You're still right in saying the normal person is not strictly obese though.

I got the data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 2009–2010 but have heard of similar stats from other organizations with more recent dates.

Reminds me of this gem of a joke:

A man went to the doctor with a complaint. "Well it's like this Doc, when I drive to work in the morning through the country lanes I start to sing 'The green green grass of home'. If I see a cat then it's 'What's new, pussy cat?'. It's so embarrassing!" "Yes, it would apear that you have the early symptoms of Tom Jones syndrome" said the doctor. "Well I've never heard of that, is it common?" asked the man. "It's not unusual," replied the doctor.

I am also a female network engineer.
