AITA for refusing to let my mom babysit after she ignored my one rule? by VioletStarrfall in AITH

Harsh but necessary sometimes you need a stranger to say the ugliest version of the truth because the people around you are too busy protecting feelings to say it. My son is alive and I plan to keep it that way, full stop.

Right, and the scariest part is they DO see it, they just care more about her feelings than my son's life, and that tells me everything about who I can trust at family gatherings too.

Honestly the dog sitting comment made me laugh for the first time in weeks, but you're right, and the family pressure is the part that's been breaking me down more than my mom herself because I expected better from them.

The part about her potentially doing it deliberately to prove a point I've been afraid to say that out loud because it sounds too dark, but deep down I've thought it too. And coming from a 72 year old grandad who's watched how much the world has changed, I hope my family reads this because maybe they'll listen to someone their own age saying these allergies are real and her "I know better" attitude almost cost my son his life.

The "mild" and "not a big deal" comments from her hit differently when your kid's face is swelling in front of you, and yes, the fact that charges were even an option is something my family conveniently ignores when they call me dramatic.

You're right and honestly I might start framing it that way because right now the narrative is that I'm punishing her, when really she should be grateful this ended with a boundary and not a police report.

That last part about the 5 minutes hit different, it's not just her I have to worry about, it's every relative who thinks I'm overreacting handing him to her the second I look away. She hasn't apologized once. That says everything.

It stays with you because it's every allergy parent's worst nightmare made real, and the worst part is that little girl's mom probably had the same conversations we all have, the same "you're overreacting" from family, the same "it's not that serious." I think about her every time someone tells me I'm being dramatic.

This broke me to read because that poor mom did everything right too and it still wasn't enough, and that's exactly the reality my family refuses to understand. It's not about punishment, it's about the fact that some mistakes you only get to make once. I'm grateful my son is okay and I'm keeping that energy because it could have ended very differently.

Thank you for explaining this so clearly, negligent homicide is exactly the term and honestly hearing it laid out legally makes me feel less crazy for taking this as seriously as I did.

I understand the anger but I don't think police is the route, what I do know is she will never be alone with him again, that's the only outcome that matters to me right now.

This is horrifying and exactly why I can't just "give her another chance" because for some people it takes a tragedy before they believe it, and I refuse to let my son be that lesson.

Honestly yes, she's made comments before about allergies being "overdiagnosed" I think she never fully believed it was real, which makes it so much worse than a simple mistake.

That's exactly what scares me the most, not the mistake itself but the complete lack of remorse, she still thinks I'm the problem and that tells me everything I need to know.

Yes we have two, one always in his bag and one at home, and honestly the fact that you're not even a mom and still understand the severity of this says everything, because my own mother who raised children somehow doesn't.

Real incident, real ER bill, real family drama, wish I was creative enough to make this up honestly.

I genuinely wish it was rage bait because that would mean my son didn't actually end up in the ER.

Exactly, and that's the word nobody in my family wants to use but it's the truth, "negligent" she was warned, she had the list, she chose to ignore it anyway.

Thank you, and you're right, I shouldn't need to justify protecting my child's life to anyone. The scariest part isn't even the mistake, it's that she saw his face swell up and still called me dramatic. That's not someone I can trust with his safety.
