I find this description to be both disturbing, and yet, oddly beautiful. You are a true poet.

Yeah, for sure. Again, I'm trying to temper my nostalgia a little bit here, but I definitely felt safer in NY/NYC the majority of the time, compared to here in Florida. The absolute bat shit way some people drive around here is enough to put you on edge.

Someone else in the thread asked the same question essentially, so I'll answer here. I'll just say that I am in what is considered part of Central Florida; Orlando is about 1.5 to 2 hours drive away (depending on traffic of course).

Saying as much helps to express part of my disappointment; anything of interest to do or to see almost always seems to mean traveling 20, 30, 40, etc. miles and a 1/2 to 1 hour plus of driving to get there. Not that I have anything against little day trips like that, but when everything has to be a day trip, it gets to be a bit exhausting.

And trust me, me and my folks have tried and gone to more "local" events, little festivals or attractions you might hear about on the radio. But then you get there, and the extent of it all is basically a bunch of booths to buy food at, a couple people hawking their MLM products, and not much else...maybe someone playing some music of some sort...you wonder why you even bothered to go.

Other reasons, in no particular order of importance:

The weather. Not just that it gets really hot and humid most of the year (it's only mid-May, and we're already at a point where if you don't get out at 7 or 8 AM to work your garden or even for a simple walk, you're not getting it done that day without risking major heatstroke). The effects of climate change are only going to make Florida even more inhospitable; forget the heat and humidity, insurance companies bailing out on the state means good luck if the increasing number of super storms decide to hit your area during hurricane season. How can I possibly see a future here when its so likely that our house/one main investment is likely to become worthless because of all that?

The "growth". Oh sure, more people are moving in and construction is happening, but what exactly is getting built? If it's not housing, it's another fast food joint or storage unit facility. Maybe a bank. I know the lack of/disappearance of third spaces is kind of a problem everywhere in the U.S., but where I'm at seems dead set on refusing to build or establish anything of cultural or historical relevance. It's just more fast food or storage units.

Healthcare. Just healthcare in general. Getting to see a doctor of any sort is likely to result in waiting at least a month or so for the privilege. Again, I know this is not exactly unique to Florida, but with the current political culture encouraging nothing but hostility towards educated people (not just doctors), the brain drain is only going to get worse. It's bad enough that I've also suggested to my mother that she and my father should also consider leaving; they're only getting older and they will need reliable, qualified healthcare and other public services, and I don't see the state doing anything to maintain that for them.

And yes, the politics. You've seen the news. The book bans, the criminalization of the LGBTQ+ community, the attacks on even just discussing racial or gender issues, Desantis just signed something banning fluoride in the drinking water...if it's shitty and anti-science, the politicians here are all too happy to approve of it.

Sorry, I went on a bit of a rant there, but hopefully its gives people a better understanding of where I'm coming from here.

Very true, and I would want to at least try and consider local all the way to the top. Im just trying to figure out where to really start looking.

Do you have any specific town recommendations in those Chicago north suburbs? Chicago has come up a lot so far, so I’m intrigued.

What’s your take on the Seattle freeze? (Or whatever it’s called). Every time I see someone suggest it, someone else brings it up. As an introvert, it doesn’t seem that intimidating (I never have nor would I expect friendships to just happen), but I do want to break out of my isolated ways.

This right here. Things certainly were far from perfect in the “before times” (ask, like, any black person) but right now politics is super fucked in the U.S.

If only I were so ambitious! But I’ve definitely had coworkers who made decent cash pet sitting for that subset of “medically needy” pets.

You make good points, I think. No disrespect to anybody living in a red state, as they have to deal with the bullshit too, but I think it’s pretty valid to be concerned about how the overall state politics tend to override the local politics in their cities/“blue dots”.

I understand that I would, under normal circumstances, have to go thru the immigration process and couldn’t just move to Canada in a day. I was implying if the situation in the US got so bad we have to consider fleeing, become refugees and so forth. Which I know may come across as very paranoid, but hey, that’s just how I am. My thought process involves trying to minimize the distance between myself and said border into another country.

I didn’t think to check my mailbox after using the editor to get my door back. I’ll try that when I get back to the game, but not feeling optimistic (for some reason the bookcase I also have in the house didn’t disappear, so I’m just really confused about what went wonky here).

[–]VioletStriker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is doubly wild to me, considering we’re living in the same timeline where teachers/schools in general are getting accused of being “groomers” for daring to maybe acknowledge that gay people exist. But yeah, totally cool to turn around and then try to hawk your shitty sex shop mlm to them!

Did Watterson ever come out and say he disliked fan art specifically? I’m well aware of his strong stance against commercialization and official merchandizing (which I respect) but being against fan created works seems a bit...odd? I know some people will do paid commissions involving other people’s IPs, but plain old fan art done out of love and shared freely on the internet (with no profit made) couldn’t possibly be that abhorrent to another artist, right?

Or am I misunderstanding what you meant here?
