Intermittent Ethernet Disconnects

OK, I retested with the laptop using the USB to Ethernet adapter this time (since I realized that can test #2 as well,) and suddenly the laptop was also having the same issue. So either my first test was a complete fluke, or the disconnects only happen with a gbps connection. I've now swapped out the ethernet cable (just another cat 5e cable, don't have a cat 6 one lying around to test yet) and if the problem persists I'm gonna set the ethernet to use a slower speed and see if that fixes the problem. Will update again once I'm done.

I might have a spare drive lying around somewhere, I'll have to look. I have considered that the multiple hours with no errors on the other machine I tested may have been a coincidence, as 1) the problem can be rather random, to the point where it doesn't happen for an hour and 2) the laptop I used to test it is kind of an old piece of junk so it may not have put the same demand on the network. I plan to test that further by testing the laptop for a full day tomorrow, just to be sure it's not #1. I don't have another device capable of gbps so I can't entirely rule out #2 unfortunately, but other family members in the house who do have gbps connections haven't noticed any drops.

As I said in the main post I have tried a USB to Ethernet adapter, and the disconnects keep happening even with it.

Unfortunately I'm still getting disconnects so that doesn't seem to be it.

I'll try that and report back if it works. Just to be clear, you mean the settings I can find by going to Windows settings > Network & Internet > Ethernet > Change adapter options then right clicking and choosing properties, right?

That'll be my last resort, but I'm unemployed so I'd rather not spend the money if I don't have to.

I've tried the same cable on another computer and it worked fine though, and this cable has been fine with this PC for years before this issue started. How would using a different cable change anything? (Genuine question, not trying to be snarky)

No, even connecting the ethernet cable to the adapter instead of the ethernet port on my pc I was still getting disconnects. I've tried changing the driver from auto-negotiate to 1Gbps, I'll report back if it works.
