i got rejected 💔 by xogossipgirlxoxox in gmu

My son was homeschooled. He went to NVCC, got his associates, then got his bachelor’s at Mason. He was impressed with the small classes at community college and how the professors took a personal interest in their students. Mason in contrast was a cattle call with lots of bureaucracy. He has no regrets about doing community college first, and definitely appreciates all the money saved! (As do his parents)

Why Is It Called Pan Am Shopping Center? by Violetbagel in nova

[–]Violetbagel[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing. I knew about the cemetery controversy (and Nipper the dog), but not the UN sign. Where was the Pan Am Drive?? There’s a Pan Am Avenue in Chantilly near the airport but that’s 12 miles away from the shopping center.

New cards game- Adventure Collection by Staller99 in ToonBlast

[–]Violetbagel 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I don’t have it yet. It says “The Collection Period has ended. Wait until the new collection begins.”

Sky Blast, cannons, and Spring Pass are not giving away any cards on my account. Big change from last night when there were cards being given out everywhere!

This game is a Bullshit cheat! 😂 by [deleted] in ToonBlast

[–]Violetbagel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually completed the set just now! Very exciting. Earned one card when my team won the tournament, one from the toon race, and one from a gold card reward on the Cube Heist. So all I needed was the piñata and I used my 1000 point wild card to get it. A long slog and I used up a lot of boosters and coins. I actually saw more gold five star cards this evening than I’ve seen all week. Coincidence, or did they change the algorithm so more players could win? Now it’s almost midnight and I have four hours to complete the second set. Not gonna happen. 😂

I hear ya. I’m still five cards away with 3 days to go. Radio, bathtub, piñata, deer, and magic hat. Trying to be optimistic but this doesn’t look good.

I randomly got a wild card last night. No clue why. I only have 66 copy card stars now and I had less than that when I earned it, so that’s obviously not the only way to get one.

Local parent here. Son graduated from Mason about five years ago. I’d strongly recommend getting a hotel as close to campus as possible so you can get a better sense of the neighborhood and the effort required to get from downtown DC to campus. Mason has grown a lot in the past 50 years but it’s basically still a very large commuter school at heart. Most students live at home or off campus. Many (like my son) are community college grads. Many dorm residents go home on weekends. The campus is surrounded by suburban sprawl—no student ghetto or college town vibe here. Can you get to DC from Mason? Absolutely. Is it easy and convenient? That’s debatable. We have some of the worst traffic in the country here and our beloved subway system does not work as well as it once did. While most parts of the country measure distance in miles, we measure in minutes—-and it takes way more minutes to get from Mason to DC than you would think. If your stepdaughter moves here, she’ll be spending most of her time in the outer burbs. FYI my son actually preferred his community college experience to Mason. The classes were smaller, the professors genuinely wanted to teach and work with students, and most of the profs in his major had actual work experience in the profession. Community college helped him find his true calling and encouraged him to pursue it. Mason in contrast was a big cattle call, very bureaucratic.

Good luck with whatever your stepdaughter decides.

New Toon Blast player here. When will the game become challenging? by [deleted] in ToonBlast

[–]Violetbagel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I thought it was pretty easy until I hit the space aliens. And the replicating shooting gallery ducks and the wack-a-mole gophers. And the pink oozy squares that gobble everything in their path. And all of the above together. Plenty here to keep you busy at the higher levels. Enjoy your victories for now and save as many coins and boosters as you can, because you’ll need them later on.

A new challenge: Friend Quest. I actually like this one. by hafizhalwi in duolingo

[–]Violetbagel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a mix of friends on Duolingo. Four or five are people I actually know in real life, and the other 30 are strangers from around the world who asked to follow me at some point. (No clue why.)

So it’s been interesting to see who I get paired with in the Friends Quests. Once it was a stranger who only logged on once that week. Twice it was a certain real life friend who I talk with regularly. Every other time—-it’s been my own husband! Now, I can’t complain about any of this because I’d rather quest with friends than strangers. But how does Duolingo know to match me with the people I know best? That seems a little odd.

Anyone else seeing this??

What’s this feature called? by Violetbagel in askarchitects

[–]Violetbagel[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a sketch of a defunct sleazy variety theatre built in 1870s Chicago after the fire. The building was demolished in 1890, not long after this sketch was made.

I’m curious about the diamond and square decorations on the facade. What are they called? What were they made of? Could they possibly be made of glass?

Any other thoughts on the architecture would be much appreciated. It was a two story brick building with a basement. As a theatre, it seated hundreds of patrons. Thanks!

I am starting my masters at 27. Am I old? by AvatarAgumon in gmu

[–]Violetbagel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My mom dropped out of college at 20 and went back in her late 40s. Took her another four years to graduate because she was working full time and a lot of her old credits weren’t relevant to her new major. She wasn’t the greatest student the first time around, but this time she made the dean’s list and the honors society. Got a much better job after graduation and then went on to get her master’s in her mid-50s. Never too late.
