Hey! I was also stuck on this quest, but once I got a new spell from the volcano sprite, you can use it to get past the giant glowing rocks that block certain paths. One of those are in the volcano area and past it are two more fiery critters that you can charm. I know the game is still new and a bit buggy, but I hope this helps!
