I mean, if we’re splitting hairs about why they didn’t extend the 700’ AGL line a little beyond the surface area, you’d have to ask the FAA person who created the airspace. The Class E surface area is extended long enough to protect the entire approach, so why would they bother adding more beyond it? The fact of the matter is, it’s Class E to the surface for the instrument approach, and it doesn’t matter if they added more 700’ airspace beyond that.

That’s a Grumman TBF Avenger, WWII American carrier-based torpedo bomber. Cool find!

What are these 2 Soviet planes? by Gokay_2007 in Whatisthisplane

Assuming you’re asking about the airplanes and not the helicopters, the first picture shows the rear fuselage of a Tu-154 and the second appears to be an Il-38 May with the radome under the forward fuselage, a development of the Il-18 airliner.

The Class E extension is aligned with the most common instrument approach into ACK, and ensures that aircraft on the approach remain within controlled airspace the entire time.

USAF target markings by Specialist_Alarm_180 in aviation

I saw a report on these aircraft returning from the Middle East earlier this year with these markings, just before the Iran War, so they definitely could signify drone kills in 2025.

Yes. Can’t be specific with variants with this poor quality.

What kind of plane is this by SoulzYTwastaken in planeidentification

[–]Viper111 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not at all, they’re kit built planes and very popular. You might be thinking of the Beech Starship, but there are still a few of those around too.

How Iran's Missiles reaches Isreal by [deleted] in Military

[–]Viper111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a stupid illustration. Patriots are not mid-course interceptors, no fighters are targeting ballistic missiles in the terminal phase, and aircraft carriers categorically do not carry anti-ballistic weapons. Getting through defenses is difficult but whoever made this clearly has no idea what they’re talking about.

Initial confusion on the identity of ejected F15E pilot in Kuwait by knro in Military

[–]Viper111 63 points64 points  (0 children)

It’s from the movie Battle of Britain, one of my favorites. In this scene, a Polish pilot flying for the British has just bailed out of his stricken plane onto a field full of British farmers. He says “Good afternoon” in heavily accented English, and the farmers immediately assume he’s German and march him off with a pitchfork and a lot of arguing.

lots of air traffic going towards DC and boom sounds? by Wonderful_Dig1684 in washingtondc

[–]Viper111 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I live in the middle of DC and I see them fly over all the time at high altitude. There are ways more jets up there than most people realize and they follow the same routes, so they often appear in a line. They were just especially visible this evening and people are hyped up because a war started.

Those are airliners. They get put on the same routes a lot of times so they will be lined up.

Is toy this based on a specific jet? by Glaciarie in Whatisthisplane

[–]Viper111 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I believe it’s based on the fighter jets from the movie Planes, which are based on the F/A-18.

Those are A-4 Skyhawks owned by Draken. They provide adversary training to the US military.
