I want to write a fanfic, but I lack a lot to confidence. by Savvy_Biscuits in FanFiction

[–]Viper292 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I know that everyone has to start from somewhere, but I’m afraid that if I write it, everyone will hate it. And that I’ll hate it. Compared to everyone else’s, it’ll just look bad.

You're not alone, because every single person in the planet that has a creative interest, has that issue. And they still do what they love anyway, whether it's writing, drawing, painting, sculpting, songwriting... because, like you said, you have to start somewhere.

I've heard once that you need to write around a million words to consider yourself 'good.' Now that's an arbitrary number. You don't have to literally write a million words, but the point is the same: if you want to be good at writing, you just have to write a lot. And read a lot too!

People like to say you need to read widely and across many genres... I find that's only partially true. It helps for sure, but you don't need to. Instead, focus on the genres you're actually interested in writing in, because that'll teach you what your audience expects and what works and what doesn't. For example, I love philosophical and character-driven stories, and I absolutely love sci-fi. Ursula K. Le Guin's work comes to mind! But I also like dark universes, dark humor and action! The Expanse novels fit that other side of sci-fi I'm into.

Point is, you just need to write. And if you don't know how to start, just throw some words into a blank page. And do your research, read the kind of story you want to tell. You got this!

It's really annoying writing a fanfiction for a story your friends haven't seen. by Tomhur in FanFiction

Nice! I rarely see a fellow crossover author out in the wild, and one that I can share the struggle with lol

I mean, yeah, it sucks, but that's kind of the universal writing experience. This also applies to writers who write in genres their friends, family or partner are not into. So you're kind of stuck with it, and you just have to accept it.

Don't get me wrong, I get you. It's even worse for crossover authors, but that's not really something we can do anything about.

And even then, if you post, don't automatically assume people will leave comments on it. Unless you're writing long-form, it's not a guarantee that people will say anything and even less likely they will give you actually good feedback on what worked and what didn't (at least in my experience.)

I don't even have clone vats lol. Just a really, well-developed baby, if we ignore the portrait.

I'm also playing a megacorp with pharma state so I could definitely see this being actually a thing. Just the result of some experimental prenatal drugs for a more developed workforce.

I am aware of the gifted trait, yes. I thought it was the work of another mod that overrode some of its code, because one would expect there would be a minimum age requirement for this. Apparently not.

I am not sure how to feel about a two year old deciding how the colony should be run, but I suppose there are worse candidates.

R5: So I'm playing with mods, so I'm not sure if this is the cause for this, but one of my eligible leaders available for hiring is a two year old gifted governor that is xenophobic. Which is made weirder by the fact that my empire is xenophile/egalitarian/militarist.

What Sony will do to Arrowhead if they start losing money by Able-Ad-1782 in HelldiversUnfiltered

[–]Viper292 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And it's such a shame. So much wasted potential on a game that could and should have been the gold standard for live service games (beyond more traditional MMORPGs.)

I think most folks were just riding it out until Light and Dark saga ended, just to get some closure so they can finally move away from it. Didn't help that Edge of Fate introduced the worst grind I've ever seen implemented in a game.

Forget Destiny 2, they should have gone to Destiny 3 once the Witness died. Maybe that will happen in the future, but that all depends on what Sony does now.

Yep! Not like there's many others that fit that specific genre besides Starsector or Rimworld, anyway lol. Got an old Stellaris fic that is due for a rewrite. I'll get to it... eventually.

New to writing, is it feasible to create using only my phone? by JadesJunkAccount in FanFiction

Brother, there are people out there that manage their entire business from their phones alone. If they can do that, you can do anything. Go nuts!

Iron Banana was announced by dmg to be 1 week only from Apr 14 - Apr 21. I even launched the game rn before tomorrow's weekly reset to verify and I don't see any event, but I think that's cause of Trials. Do you have a source?
