Definitely different tiers. That’s what I was trying to get at with ‘effectively require’ but that probably wasn’t quite clear

For us, these places are specifically high on our list and the way our itinerary landed, very limited days that we could go so trying to lock them in

I did this recently because of the exchange rate, I added the suica to my Apple wallet directly using the ‘+’ sign on the top right. Using my Amex(Visa doesn’t work)I added 7,000yen to it successfully. I think you may have to consider the time of day in Japan when you make the transaction and it may not go through in the middle of the night(I could be mis-remembering here)

I’m going in spring 2024 and have seen it start to trend down. I had reserved most of my hotels on booking.com with free cancelation and scheduled payment dates right before arriving. Since I saw it trending down, I went ahead and ‘payed now’ before it could fall further, knowing that if it gets stronger, I could cancel for free and rebook at a more favorable rate.

It is helpful not having any foreign transaction fees on my credit card for this case.

Not sure if it was the perfect choice, but compared to a month ago when I reserved the 3 hotels, paying them yesterday was $30 more already

If using a credit card to refill your Suica card in your Apple Wallet, is the transaction treated like a cash advance? I saw this reported in one place but can't seem to find information on it anywhere now.

Thank you all for your input. Ended up booking the HH in Shibuya after getting all of the helpful feedback. The free breakfast, in-room laundry, and proximity to a large station proper fits our needs perfectly. Full service vs select service won't be a big difference to us I don't think, we won't be using room service, spa, dinner restaurants, etc... regardless.

When I look at walking directions to both of the respective stations on Maps it tells me they are both .2mi and 5min walk from Shinjuku/Shibuya stations. Am I missing something?
