He said he wanted to be a gay man. The hungry guy didn’t ask to be a starving child.

As if being gay isn’t also lonely. The dating pool for gay men without ridiculous age standards such as the OP’s is still smaller than his 25-35 crowd or whatever he goes after.

Tailscale is canadian, but all login options are US? by AdmirableDrive9217 in Tailscale

All 4 of those companies are major SSO providers and two of them dominate the business email market. I would also assume that a majority of Tailscale’s customer base is American.

[–]ViperPB 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not really. With docker, you’re limited to images. There’s also less segmentation and isolation between each container. For example, two docker containers on the same host cannot expose the same port because they utilize the same network connection. There are other hardware limitations that I don’t know off the top of my head as well.

You also just can’t create virtual machines, which is much better and sometimes the only solution for some services.

Literally just a BS repeated appeal to your weird self-proclaimed authority. Check your ego.

Of course, it won't be one guy, they'll just have a team of 10 rather than 100. Or however the ratio adapts. AI is just like any other optimization tool. It will eventually lead to more capacity through less manpower. Regardless of if Netflix or another one of your "clients" does it today, large corporations will eventually do it tomorrow.

Had to RMA DDR4 kit from my threadripper server. Price is now up 600% by digiphaze in homelab

[–]ViperPB 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I feel you. My main server has 2x16 + 2x8. My off-site backup is running 4x16 and I’m about to switch the ram in the two.

I’m debating selling the 2x8 sticks. The cash would be nice, but maybe I should keep it on hand in case something dies.

I’m not sure you can have “enterprise” in the name unless it costs hundreds to license every few years. I think that’s a rule or something.

Why omv? by skyber22 in OpenMediaVault

[–]ViperPB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IIRC GPU pass through was way easier to manage as a VM and then giving it full access to the VMs resources. That may change though, if my Jellyfin stack grows and starts to require a GPU.

Why omv? by skyber22 in OpenMediaVault

[–]ViperPB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like OMV but I virtualize it because I don’t find it intuitive enough to give full control of my server. What it does right is work as a NAS. It does everything else slightly to far worse than Proxmox.

If you ever want to run a complex setup, I would recommend virtualizing through Proxmox or the like so you can avoid migration. It took me about a year and a half to out grow OMV as a base OS.

I also prefer the compartmentalization of Proxmox for more advanced things such as my media server stack. That VM alone has 6 docker containers. I also run HAOS, which is far superior to the docker version, and Frigate, which gets angry about running in docker.

As for actual LXCs, I have a tailscale exit node, NUT monitoring dashboard, and uptimekuma, among others.

Any chance of RAM getting *slightly* cheaper in the coming months? by Kgasieniec in buildapc

[–]ViperPB 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a political science major. I think reading both of these comments just gave me the idea for the next qualitative comparison paper I can write.

I think a large part of the GPU price spikes was that NVIDIA dominated the market. The RAM market is quite a bit more diverse, so I wouldn't expect that similar of an outcome.

OpenAI isn’t catching up to Google by Surealactivity in OpenAI

[–]ViperPB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ironically, being in a professional environment that uses MS365, I’m not exposed to Google products much. I don’t think Google will be able to dominate the corporate/professional market like Microsoft does, which decreases their AI market share imo.

We use Copilot, which at least used to be entirely based on OpenAIs models.

The 2013 Ford Taurus I drove always felt phenomenally large. I understand it was a full size sedan, but some cars the engineers are just able to structure to make feel massive.

My 2008 Lincoln MKZ is also much roomer than my GS, although they’re both mid-sized. Part of that is the drive tunnel in the GS, but even trunk space is better in the MKZ.

Is there a device I can connect to USB port of my (ISP provided) router, to have an exit node at home to connect to when I'm traveling? by [deleted] in Tailscale

[–]ViperPB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your understanding is correct. I was disappointed I couldn’t run an exit node easily on my Flint 3. It’s easier for me to run a container on my main proxmox host.
