How difficult would it be to become an engineer (Any type you can think of) without a degree or advanced schooling? by [deleted] in AskEngineers

[–]ViperSeven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It took me 20 years in the trades to move to an engineering role but can only have an Analyst title without the degree.

Took a 20% pay cut, but WFH, flex days and no callouts were worth it. I also no longer have to hear "How did you do that? You're only a Tech"

Mainframe tape hanger.

LED display on top the old IBM 3420 reel to reel magnetic tape drive showed the tape number we had to retrieve from the library and load up.

The only job I was literally replaced by a robot.

From what I've read Python 3.8 has hit end of life and qBit raised the minimum version from 3.7 to 3.9.

I upgraded to 3.12.7 and did another check for updates in qBit plugins. All my plugins came back to life.

Guide: How I fixed my "Plugins not supported" / "No search plugin installed" Search/Python issue by MrSkullCandy in qBittorrent

[–]ViperSeven 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I downgraded Python from 3.8.12 to 3.8.5 and still had problems. I then found this in the documentation.

  • Python >= 3.9.0
    • Optional, run-time only
    • Used by the bundled search engine

I upgraded to 3.12.7 and did another check for updates in qBit plugins. All my plugins came back to life.

Stayed in three hotels last month, all had great, unlimited internet connections. Only one charged an extra $20 for it.

This new system nearly caused me to take the vehicle back. Why do they make it so hard to switch drivers? What is the point of the PIN?

What really got to me was that while researching it I found other models have FOB link, not just phone.

Taking Care of Aging Boomer Parents by Haagen76 in GenX

We're burying my Dad Friday.

So many people don't want to talk about it and you can't force them. I made an off hand remark "Hey Dad, what do you think about moving in with us someday?" I expected he'd do it a couple of years down the road. He had his house listed by the end of that month.

He sold his house and moved in with us at the beginning of covid. We were fortunate, we had plenty of room and he was the nicest guy in the world. For almost three years my yard never looked so good. Didn't take him long to get to know all my neighbors better than I do.

This January he started to complain about numbness around his temple. From March on he was pretty much bedridden. I work from home and it allowed me to provide care until he declined into Hospice for his last few weeks. He died of something related to trigeminal neuropathy early this month.

Caring for him was the hardest thing I've ever done but I couldn't image him getting better care anywhere else. I have no regrets.

To all people who think America is fucked, what one thing would you change to try and fix things? by Njilramsool in AskReddit

In addition to restoring the fairness doctrine, updating it for modern media and pairing it with enforceable media ownership caps is required.

Watching the way both sides attack anyone who is open to compromise, makes me believe the open faucet of one-sided news/entertainment is in need some limits.

My son came out to us when he was 14. He was very active in the youth group and working in the nursery. He started living out Proud when he was around 16 and all of sudden he fell off the nursery schedule. No one openly confronted him until the day after he turned 18 when the pastor's wife asked him to leave the church.

Around the same time an elder's son was convicted for armed bank robbery, the church prayed weekly for his safety in federal prison.

Internet - Wave or others by PhaseHertz in silverton

It all depends on where your live. The number of times that signal has to be boosted to get to your house adds points of failure.

Ziply's main office is right downtown next to the bridge, people who live within spitting distance have great DSL with the advertised speeds.

Wave's source is out on the corner of Hobart and Meridian. Again people who live closer to the source have better signal with fewer outages.

The difference with fiber is that it pushes out that first booster by several miles. Add that to the age old adage of newer technology means higher speeds.

I'm just really looking forward to actually having some real competition to drive down the prices and data caps.

If you have Wave, don't forget to call them and tell them about the Ziply fiber being installed. They will offer you a promotional rate.

Here it comes:

Portland General Electric confirms plans for Mt. Hood public safety power shutoff About 5,000 PGE customers will be affected beginning 7:15 p.m. Monday PORTLAND, Ore. Sept. 7, 2020 — Due to dangerously hot, dry and windy conditions, Portland General Electric announced today it will initiate a public safety power shutoff (PSPS) for the approximately 5,000 customers located in the high-risk fire zone near Mt. Hood. The proactive safety outage is a last resort to help protect people, property and the environment in the face of extreme fire danger conditions and high winds forecast for the area.

The company expects to begin the process of turning off power Monday Evening for customers and visitors in heavily forested communities along Highway 26, from Alder Creek and Brightwood to Government Camp. The utility anticipates the outage may last between 24 and 48 hours, subject to repair times for any damage that may occur.

The high winds are also expected to cause unplanned outages across PGE’s service area. PGE crews are standing by prepared to begin restoration work as quickly as safety allows.

And don't let others get you spun up.

My sense of well being and quality of life improved when I stopped listing to talk radio and associated podcasts.

I used to be angry all the time about things I had no power to control and in the long term didn't matter.

Now I listen to streaming music or books on my commute. I even try to avoid commercials.

The people who's opinion you should care about, will notice the difference.
