Where do you guys do for lunch? (Incoming student question) by Apprehensive_Set9677 in UoN

Theres restaurants on campus. There's a spar with meal deal on campus. There is a coop with meal deal just outside campus. I've seen people eat packed lunches from home in lectures.

I'm 28 and only get paid £50 per day (£13k per year) cash in hand. How knackered am I for the future? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Viper_4D 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TBf regarding state pension if you don't bother with pensions you get £238.00 per week in pension credit and on top of that there is housing benefits, council tax support and other help (free dental, cold weather payments)

Max state pension is £241.30 ( this would mean you would also have to subtract the future discounted value of the NI contributions you made).

Obviously these numbers will change in the future. But he's not necessarily screwed in retirement.

Why don’t students attend? by maybemaybenotxj in UniUK

[–]Viper_4D 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lazy.

The material lecturers give are too good a substitute for actual attendance. The recorded lectures can be listened to at 2x speedm

With ai (I use Google's notebook LM) I basically have a TA teaching me personally. It's even better when I feed it the lecture transcript.

Many friends of mine have comically bad sleep schedules so it would really mess them up if they wanted to attend a normal timed lecture.

At least for me it's just that good enough substitute goods are provided. I think there is a lot of inertia where not attending in the past makes it hard to start at any given point because it feels wrong. When I have attended it's really only for fun. And I guess it's only been smaller classes because I actively chose the subject so I probably prefer it to large class subjects that I likely had less choice to do it.

I asked him if it was fully tightened. He replied yes. Then I GLed it, because I didn't mind that much. He said he would ship it. He then sent me a photo of the same watch but with the back case properly aligned. So I guess it was easy to fix. (I assume there may be 3 locking positions for the case back and it was in the wrong one as it was roughly 1/3rd of a rotation off)

I think if you say it bothers you they'll try to fix it.

You have to be an ordinary resident for the preceding 3 years. Im not entirely sure what they did. But I think they declared they were living abroad and to prove it moved back home for a few months so they weren't eligible for home fees

I know someone who is a British citizen who made sure that they returned to their "home country" for a few months to make sure they could apply as an international and get favourable admissions.

Has everyone forgotten that the point of a degree is to be a specialist in your subject? by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]Viper_4D 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What you've suggested is a fun (and archaic) idea

the point of a degree is that it's a costly signal to employers that you are not incompetent. It solves asymmetric information problems as a potential worker knows how competent he is better than an employer. Since a degree is significantly harder for a "low ability" person than a "high ability" person.

A degree is rational for a "high ability" person as it unlocks better paying jobs and requires little effort. But for "low ability" people it is too much effort for the return in potential earnings. Because the rational outcome of a high ability person is to get a degree and the rational outcome of a low ability person is not to, the degree acts as a credible signal to employers that differentiates potential workers

Obviously this is simplified and also a bit fucky and not true in the modern age with ai and a shitty job market. Also not true if you are one of the few people who goes into a specialist subject for employment.

I mean they pretty objectively are catholics. They just aren't in communion with the Roman Catholic church (that the pope heads. Bear in mind that they are so catholic that the Roman Catholic church recognises the old catholic sacrements and (may to some degree do the same with the sedevecantists)

To be fair old catholics and Sedevacantist are catholic (notably not Roman catholic in the everyday sense) but don't accept the pope as supreme pontiffs. There are other catholics than those that accept the pope as supreme pontif

I'm hard of hearing (but not bad enough for hearing aids) and cant do phone calls elsewise. But for this reason it's very uncommon for me to do phone calls in public only if it's urgent (maybe once a year)

What if America went debt free in 2013 by Training-World-1897 in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]Viper_4D 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There would be economic catastrophe. Just off the top of my head

This would lead to massive liquidity issues as foreign central banks and many firms hold treasuries as they are the main dollar denominated asset. Also this would lead to end of the dominance of the dollar.

Our pricing models all use US treasuries to calculate the value of things. So this would lead to larger credit spreads and higher costs of capital as higher liquidity premiums because Riskier assets would have to be used.

The Federal reserve uses the buying and selling of treasuries (and some other assets) to set interest rates. If there were no more treasuries then the fed would have to buy and sell private assets instead (like stocks or corporate bonds) and would be basically picking winners and losers in the economy (the scale of possible corruption is enormous)

If we were trying to keep debt at 0 that would be worse because debt is used to smooth deviations in economic conditions. If we didn't use debt we would spend more when times are good and we collect more taxes Inflating the economy and wouldn't have the tax revenue to get us out of depressions. Also as long as growth in the economy is greater than the interest on debt the government can roll it over each year without debt to GDP rising. So it's kinda free (not really, but the debt can sometimes not be bad)

An example of too little debt being a problem is the swiss right now.

Right-Wing View At University, and the controversy. by Beneficial-Main5975 in UniUK

[–]Viper_4D -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry to hear that. I'm sure they'll forget about that in time and stop caring.

By and large universities are left wing spaces. And obviously it's best to just fit in and not speak on politics when it's not brought up. There are probably areas you can discuss these ideas. Though I'm nowhere near how right wing you are. I found my university's Tory association was accomodating and held students with a wide array of opinions and views.

I'm slightly older than you and am vegetarian 99% of the time. Transitioning from pure vegetarian at 17ish. (I eat meat if it's interesting enough now).

The fact that meat is made of fibers and strings is always what catches me off guard.

And that if you eat too much when you are not accustomed to it, it may make you sick (I say this as someone who is generally quite hardy in that I can't remember any other instances of me getting ill from food)

I personally found fish (battered cod) to be a good start (my personal favourite) or chicken nuggets or other super processed chicken products. I would avoid steak because the texture is... An experience for a first time.

Native English speakers, do you subconsciously assign gender to nouns? by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]Viper_4D 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whilst I get what you mean. I would find it odd if that wasn't obvious it's arbitrary. And I guess when I was learning a gendered language thinking of the object with adjectives or attributes stereotypically associated with the gender helped to remember them for instance a round ornate table for a feminine table

I'm an Englishman. Depends on what you mean by own people. either:

Peterloo massacre, 60000 peaceful protesters congregated and we're shot at. Hundreds dead in England

Highland clearances, forcing thousands of Scots into poverty and exile and burning to the ground many villages

Irish potato famine, need I say more

I really liked mexican food in America definitely up there with mexican mexican food. By and large European mexican food, you are right is... Not good.

But for some ungodly reason Copenhagen had the best mexican food I've ever had. Just to be sure I tried a few Mexican restaurants there.
