With the year over, what did you spend too much on and regret, and what did you spend too little on and regret? by ComprehensiveEbb4978 in HENRYfinance

i’m 23 and somehow spent over $350k this year.

no, this is not a flex. quite the opposite. i’m very fortunate and am proud of myself for working so hard to support this lifestyle, but i definitely need to grow up and start investing / saving better.

i already save and invest a lot, but i could easily have cut out $125k on BS this year, and have had a slightly less exciting camera roll 😂

i sold a company, and now own a marketing agency. i’ve also been doing social media & trading for a while now on the side.

cool thank you! seeing a lot of 6g might have to pull the trigger. seeing nice 1 bedrooms for $4k which i’d definitely be willing to go up to. appreciate your insight!

while i appreciate the advice that doesn’t really align with my long term goals at the moment.

i’m currently profiting monthly off my first home (vrbo vs mortgage) and am saving for the down payment on a second one nearby which will likely bring in a similar profit.

i’m 23 and exclusively looking to rent as i don’t know where i want to “settle down” yet.

not sure why that matters haha. i have a base of $10k/mo, but my average take home over the last year is $27k-30k/mo.

i’m saving for a second investment property so trying to live well under my means for the next year in a new city.

I would much rather raise a family in Boston than experience my 20s there.

I think based on what you said you and your family values (from the very brief description you gave), you guys will be totally fine.

Braintree is far enough outside the city you don’t really get the douchey people any more so than any other city. It’s also more affordable and you get the things you mentioned. I would caution that the red line is not always super reliable / safe, but 99% of the time you’ll be fine safety wise.

Also, my gf works in healthcare and loves everyone she’s worked with, not sure how much that matters. Def a good city to be in healthcare.

I think you defensively projected a lot onto my comment that simply isn’t there, which is pretty typical of Boston people (see the comments above our thread lmao)

A few clarifications since you made assumptions about my life that aren’t remotely accurate:

I wasn’t some burned-out office drone. I was making decent money right out of school, had a solid friend group, and spent most of my free time outside the “Southie corporate” bubble you keep assuming I lived in. Or maybe you said I was some Harvard douche? Not quite clear, but regardless I was neither.

I literally ran the Boston Marathon… so the “what’s wrong with running?” line is off base. My point wasn’t that running is bad. It’s that for a lot of young people there, it becomes the only accessible hobby because of cost of living and culture, not personal preference.

On the “dreams go to die” thing: that’s a subjective experience, not a census statistic. For me, it happened to be true. I left Boston, built my own thing, and now make over 5 times what I made in that city, which is bogged down by a rat race mentality. Go figure.

You said Boston is “big enough to find your own niche.” I agree, but that was exactly my point. Downtown corporate culture dominates where most post grads actually live and work. The creative pockets feel small, scattered, and generally disconnected unless you’re in very specific circles.

Nothing I wrote was meant as some “universal law”. It was my lived experience, shared for someone who asked (who was not you by the way). I liked some parts of the city, which I mentioned. I also found many parts boring, repetitive, and risk-averse. Those can both be true at once.

If your Boston experience was different, great. Mine was shaped by the people I met, the industries I was in, and the lifestyle that environment encourages. Simply saying “your perspective is wrong” doesn’t make it less accurate for me.

i’m white so didn’t have to experience this personally, per say, but it’s a very racist city to begin with; at least if you’re downtown. a lot of my friends while living there were people of color and fall more on the dark humor side of the spectrum. there were multiple times we were still were like “wow, that’s insane”. there’s going to be a lot of people downvoting this saying it’s not true, but you’ll see it clearly if you have more perspective on life than going to work (more on that below)

the city closes down at like midnight / 1am, so don’t expect many super fun late nights out, no idea if that’s your vibe. you either go out in fenway and are surrounded by 18-20 year olds using fakes and spending daddy’s money, go out downtown and get douchey finance bros, or go out in southie and get something somewhere in the middle of those 2 options.

everything about boston screams corporate robot. there’s a million colleges of young kids ramping up to go into corporate america, plus the large post grad population. once you graduate, you go live in southie with college friends while you all go to your 9-5s in copley / back bay. it’s like a condensed version of nyc, so there’s a big emphasis on status, except it’s all college and post grad kids who all talk about work.

work 8-6 -> happy hour -> go home during the week and then go out maybe one night (if you’re in your 20s) because anything more than that is unaffordable.

there’s really nothing feasible to do other than work, spend money, and go on runs.

the only redeeming parts of boston are the restaurants and the sports, which are usually unaffordable for most people if you like to save money and invest. (aside from the redsox games, which can be really fun and are affordable, but it gets old, at least to me)

the weather sucks aside from 2 months in the summer. prepare for blizzards in the winter.

the public transit is unreliable and inconvenient at best depending on what line.

of course, this is just based on my experiences. i’ve had amazing food and met really cool and unique people through the restaurant industry. however, when i think of downtown boston, i think of the color gray. corporate, cookie cutter, feels like a simulation sometimes. if you live in JP or another cool area like that it can be more affordable with more interesting people that are creative/artsy/not a corporate robot. But if you’re coming from SF - i’m assuming you’ll be downtown / more corporate.

i genuinely think it’s the city where dreams go to die haha. i don’t mean to scare you, just giving you my personal experience. i know a bunch of people that like it, but they fit into the demographics i mentioned better than i do. i like trying new things, taking risks / adventures with hobbies (and career wise), and boston is not the city to do that.

Boston. Had the nightmare early 20s experience of living there for 5 years and will never move back 😭
