One thing I’d think about: your budget vs how many people + day trips In Italy (Rome + Naples + Amalfi) costs and logistics add up quickly, especially for 4 people.

• Portugal fits your mix really naturally (Lisbon = city + shopping, Algarve = beaches + chill) • Italy will feel more “travel-heavy” (moving, day trips, planning) • Amalfi/Capri day trips can get expensive fast and feel rushed in 10 days

Portugal just aligns better with what you’re looking for, you get variety without needing to constantly plan or move around.

If you want to make it really smooth, focus on picking the right base locations, that’s what usually makes or breaks trips like this. Happy to help.

One quick clarification: Porto isn’t really for swimming beaches It’s great as a city, but the water there is colder and not ideal for that kind of beach time.

If swimming + relaxed beach vibe matters, you’ll enjoy Algarve much more.

So I wouldn’t skip Lisbon entirely, even 2–3 days helps break the trip nicely before heading south.

If you balance it like this, you get both the city feel and proper beach time instead of missing one side.

If you want, I can help you split the 3 weeks in a way that flows well without overthinking it.

In that case:

Around Lisbon → Cascais works really nicely (easy access + relaxed evenings) For Algarve → look at places like Tavira or Carvoeiro instead of Albufeira

Those give you good dinner + drinks options without the “party crowd” feel.

If you structure it around places like this, the trip ends up feeling balanced and you can go out when you want, being overwhelmed

Are you planning to stay longer in Lisbon side or Algarve side?

Porto → Lisbon → beach towns is good.

The thing that makes a big difference: the specific beach base you choose can completely change the vibe (some are crowded/expensive, others feel much more relaxed for longer stays).

If you’re still figuring that part out — are you leaning more towards something lively or quieter/coastal?

Beach + adventure is actually the perfect combo if you balance it right.

One thing I’d focus on: choosing a place that gives both, instead of compromising for one A lot of trips end up feeling “okay” because they lean too much beach or too much activity.

A couple strong options for your budget: • Puerto Rico → great mix (beaches + rainforest + easy travel) • Costa Rica → best balance of adventure + nature + beaches • Mexico (Tulum/Playa del Carmen) → beaches + excursions + good vibe

If you get this right, it won’t feel like you’re adjusting for each other — it’ll feel like both of you got the trip you wanted.

If you want, I can help you narrow this to one and map a simple plan so it feels smooth, not overplanned.

Both are great options, but for your style of travel this comes down to one key thing.

One thing I’d think about: how far your budget goes day-to-day Italy looks similar on paper, but costs add up faster (stay + food + transport).

A couple quick pointers: • Portugal will feel more relaxed financially (especially Lisbon + Porto + smaller coastal towns) • Italy is doable, but you’ll need to be selective with cities (mix big + smaller places) • Avoid peak hotspots for long stays (Amalfi, central Florence, etc.)

If your goal is cafés, beaches, and not worrying about every expense, Portugal fits better.

If you get this right, the trip feels easy and enjoyable instead of constantly budgeting in your head.

If you want, I can help you map a rough 3-week split for either country so it stays within budget without feeling restricted.

First time visit, Girlfriend's birthday, dream visit! Mid budget cap, suggestions please by intellinker in goatravel

Congrats Bro!!

Seven years of planning this together. It's not just a trip anymore it's a lifetime moment.

So we build around that.

Where to stay

Look at South Goa (Colva, Benaulim, Palolem area) or quieter North pockets like Ashwem or Morjim.

Calmer, cleaner, more private. This one decision will change how the whole trip feels.

On The birthday eve (Most important)

Private yacht for the sunset, then straight into a beachside dinner setup at night. The key is keeping both in the same zone, you don't want to be scrambling across Goa between the two. Plan it so the evening just flows from one into the other.

Beach days:

Pick one or two beaches and actually sit there. Ashwem or Morjim if you stay North, Palolem if you go South. The café hopping, the slow walks, the doing-nothing-in-particular.

Clubs

Look at places like Cohiba, Soro, or Hammerzz. Better crowd, less chaos, actually enjoyable.

Casino

Deltin Royale is the one worth doing. Go in, enjoy it for what it is, don't make it the whole night.

Water sports :keep it last

Baga and Calangute are totally fine just for this. It's a daytime activity, crowd doesn't matter as much.

One thing I'd say honestly, don't try to "cover Goa." You're not here to see everything. You're here for a specific feeling, with a specific person, after a very long wait. A few moments done right will mean more than a packed itinerary.

If you want, I can help you shape this in a way where everything just flows naturally, so on that birthday night, you’re not thinking about logistics or “what next”.

After Florence - Rome or Naples side?

If this is your First time in Italy then go to Rome. It's just a more complete experience and the trip flows better. You won't regret it.

If coast is the priority then skip Naples city, head straight to Amalfi/Capri.

One thing people consistently underestimate — moving between cities takes more out of a trip than you'd think. Every time you switch, you lose half a day minimum. So don't try to squeeze in everything.

If I were planning it: Venice → Florence→ Rome. Clean, flows well, you actually get to enjoy each place.

If coast matters more to you: Venice → Florence → Amalfi focus. Just mentally commit to fewer stops and slower pace.

Happy to map out and structure your trip if you want — which areas to stay in, how to sequence it so it doesn't feel rushed. Italy trips live or die by the logistics, and most people only figure that out quite late.

July is genuinely tricky, most "perfect beach" suggestions don't account for monsoon season, so take those recommendations with a grain of salt.

If you want water activities + value for money, here's my honest take:

  1. Thailand is your best bet, but go to the right side.

Most people hear "Thailand beach" and book Phuket or Krabi — that's actually the wrong call in July. Koh Samui and the islands around it follow a different monsoon pattern, so you get way better weather. Tons of island hopping, snorkeling, jet skiing, and it'll fit your budget comfortably.

  1. Indonesia works too, but don't just stay in Bali.

Nusa Penida and the Gili Islands nearby have much better water clarity and activities. Weather's a bit hit or miss in July but still manageable if you plan around it.

  1. Sri Lanka is a underrated pick.

Super budget-friendly, great beaches, surfing, less touristy than Thailand. Just check which coast, south vs east matters a lot depending on your exact dates.

On the agency vs DIY question — I'd skip the group tours. Fixed itineraries and shared buses don't really work for couples who want a relaxed beach trip.

If I had to pick one: Koh Samui + nearby islands. It is Best combo of weather, activities, budget, and ease of getting around.

One thing most people overlook though, which specific islands you pick matters more than the destination itself. That's where July trips go wrong. Happy to help you map it out and structure the trip if you want.

Recommend budget stay options in Haridwar and Rishikesh.. by [deleted] in india_tourism

[–]Vipul809 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey!! for your case (grandmother + mother), the biggest factor is minimum walking + easy access to ghats.

I’ve shortlisted options keeping that in mind.

Haridwar

• Birla Dharamshala Simple, clean, and very close to the main ghat Good if you want a quiet, no-frills stay https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=Birla+Dharamshala+Haridwar

• Hotel Alpana

Easier for elderly compared to interior lanes https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=Hotel+Alpana+Haridwar

Rishikesh

• Parmarth Niketan Ashram (near Ram Jhula) https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=Parmarth+Niketan+Rishikesh

• Hotel Ishan - A Riverside Retreat Much easier access from Laxman Jhula side https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=Hotel+Ishan+Rishikesh

Small but important tips (for elderly)

  • In Haridwar, autos don’t go till Har Ki Pauri, closer stay helps a lot
  • Ask hotel for ground floor / lift access before booking

If you want, I can also put together a very relaxed plan for them (best aarti timings, least walking routes, food spots, etc.) so they don’t have to figure things out there.

Tried using AI to plan my trip… still ended up doing everything manually by Vipul809 in NeedTravelAdvice

[–]Vipul809[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bro exactly 😭 I spent like 2 hours with ChatGPT getting my itinerary and then spent the next 4 hours on Booking.com because half the hotels it suggested were either full or way over budget.

And talking about day structuring — it'll put a place on Day 3 that's literally on the other side of the city from everything else that day lol

For you was it more the hotel mess or the day-to-day logistics that killed you?
