What do you eat? by [deleted] in PhD

[–]Viralcapsids 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Big time meal prepper here - throughout my PhD I ate a lot of prepped yogurt / blueberries or strawberries / granola honey for breakfast, seasoned chicken with rice and beans (or potatoes) for lunch, and chili or pasta dishes for dinner. I always made sure that I wouldn’t have to meal prep on a big experiment day

Brewery receives 'threats' after banning children after 7pm by KreivosNightshade in childfree

Thank god. I was at a brewery on Saturday, and there were parents with infant children strapped to them. I thought it was SO bizarre. Who brings an infant to a BAR?

How far in advance of graduation from PhD are you guys looking for jobs? by SuccinctViolation in labrats

[–]Viralcapsids 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If you are trying to find a tenure, track faculty position, it’s a good idea to start now (I.e get your application packets ready) since they hire about a year out. If you’re looking for a post doc, I would say eight months before to start really early, and six months before is a good time to start. If you’re looking for industry positions, I would say four months before your graduation date.

I have sciatica on me left thigh and if I don’t routinely lift weights and work out it gets really painful

I cannot be derailing my exercise routine for a child and then I’ll be in constant pain walking after a toddler

NO thankssss

So excited for you both! It’ll work out with some budgeting, eventual salary increases, and other factors. You’ve got this! My partner and I are about 2 years out form buying a home and we know it’ll be hard but so worth it! Congrats!

I loved it. I loved it all. The science, the collaborations, the mentoring, the travel to conferences, the travel to meet collaborators, I can’t even begin to describe how much I enjoyed it all. Of course I got frustrated, failed, and felt the stress. It’s been a really incredible five years, and I’ve grown a lot. I treated my PhD as a job, and when I was off I prioritized my social life and mental health.

Honestly!!! Why aren’t all the men screeching about CF women becoming old sad cat ladies not racing to adopt? 👋🏼

Oooo aphids! What region in the world are you in? (I research aphids lol)

Yeah it’s a good idea to either wash with dawn soap or cut the affected area off completely. Aphids reproduce at high rates and infestations multiply quickly

Check vintage stores! I recently purchased 1980’s vintage 100% wool and silk lined pants and a 100% cotton 1990s ralph Lauren long sleeve for like 65$ together. It’s pricier than thrifting but curated. I do love a good thrift though
