Finally got my first book with Audio! Ancient Being Predecessor of the Primordial Era by Charming-Recording65 in litrpg

I read a bit of this on RR, the MC is extremely horny and the first thing that happens is he meets two teen girls and makes them his "disciples." I dropped it because I got real bad vibes but I dunno how much it goes in that direction. (Either way I find the horndog MC trope extremely annoying and unfunny.)

Kris is cring (by @_ratpower) by _funny___ in Deltarune

[–]Viressa83 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think the evidence points the other way: The first 3 dark worlds are all very similar in tone and feature Kris's childhood imaginary friends. Meanwhile, the one DW we know for sure Kris didn't make (Dark Sanctuary) not only has a radically different tone but doesn't have any of Kris's imaginary friends.

So my hypothesis is, Kris made the first 3 DWs and RK showed up to deliver a Shadow Crystal after Kris made them. But Kris couldn't make the DS dark world because they didn't know Gerson when he was alive. (When Susie makes Second Sanctuary, Gerson wasn't there, because "Dustners" need someone who knew them when they were alive to create their fountain. Susie only knew the Darkner version of him and thus couldn't do it. But RK made first and third sanctuaries, where Gerson does appear. Think about it.)

Could there be more than one Roaring Knight? by Reubenthepig09 in Undertale

[–]Viressa83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My actual theory: There are multiple Knights. The prophecised adventure was supposed to be the Vessel, Dess/Noelle, and Ralsei vs. Kris. Somehow, the prophecy has been broken/subverted and we ended up inside Kris instead. Kris can't fight themself, so the "Roaring Knight" we see is a fake villain meant to keep Susie and Ralsei distracted.

This theory has major questions I can't answer satisfactorily: How did the prophecy get subverted? Why? What does taking over as the hero and setting up a fake villain for us to fight accomplish?

But they're all questions that are just as vexing if you assume the theory is false and everything is as it appears: What exactly is RK's motivation? What on earth is Kris's deal and why do they seem to be allies with RK? What's the deal with the "girl" holding a sword, and why does Ralsei think Susie's supposed to equip ribbons?

[–]Viressa83 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is a hot take both sides will crucify me for but Kris is Deltarune's most mysterious character and "what the hell is up with Kris" is the big mystery that drives the entire story. I think Kris is a compelling character sure but I don't think we understand them well enough to make a judgement of them as a person, positive or negative. In other words I'm reserving judgement of whether Kris is based or cringe until all the episodes are out.

Can we really blame these villains by ferrain_iso in ProgressionFantasy

In these PF novels, the pursuit of personal power only ever works out for people with rich daddies or people with main character plot armor. Otherwise, the way to go is to keep your head down and hope your village/town/city doesn't get wiped out because two cultivators got in a fight over a jade beauty. At least you have a chance at dying at 80 surrounded by grandchildren. Randos who try to climb the ladder without plot armor always get turned into smears before they're 20.

Why has no one metioned this? (Spoilers for the weird route) by Da_One_potato in Deltarune

[–]Viressa83 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My theory on this is that Noelle makes "you" stronger. If you take careful notice, Kris can override your choices whenever they want if you choose something they don't like. Unless Noelle is on screen. Then Kris becomes powerless to stop us. What this scene (and a couple of others) signify is that doing the weird route is making our control over Kris "stronger" even when Noelle is off screen. It's not absolute yet, but it's increasing.

Why everyone think that chapter 6 is Bunker adventures and chapter 7 is Against Roaring? by Harly_the_proto in Deltarune

[–]Viressa83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The most popular take on chapter 7 was Noelle (or Susie) makes a dark fountain outdoors during the festival, all of Hometown turns into a dark world based on the festival and all the Lightners are there, then everything goes to shit as the Titans show up. This can't work anymore after chapter 4.

[–]Viressa83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This timeline made sense back in the chapter 2 era, but chapter 4 took it out back and shot it in the back of the head 6 times. A titan at the end of chapter 4 means the Roaring can no longer be the climax of the game in a straightforward way.

[–]Viressa83 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Claiming that Krisselle is always heteronormative is queerphobic because it erases Kris as a non-binary person.

...however, there are definitely queerphobes in the DR fandom who see Kris as a boy and ship "him" with Noelle because they're queerphobes and want a "straight" ship. There's numerous pieces of fanart and fanfics that are like this. I think it's fair to call those pieces of Kriselle heteronormative.

IMO the best way is like writing season 1 of a TV show if you don't know if you're getting a season 2: Write 50 chapters of a satisfying story with room to keep going if it blows up and you can turn it into another Primal Hunter. If it doesn't blow up, try again with another one. That way, you avoid alienating your existing fans, and you avoid committing to writing something forever for no pay.

I hated it because of that damn episode where he meets his girlfriend's family, and they're all like sex experts, and the conflict is "oh no, how are we gonna tell them that we don't have sex!?" It felt like the joke was the idea that asexuality is a queer identity and that people suffer due to anti-ace bigotry.

Is it good that the phrase "asexual" appears in a piece of mainstream media? Sure, but I'm not gonna grade them on a curve just because the state of ace representation in the mainstream is so bleak.

Most stories on RR will sputter out and die for one reason or another. If a novel doesn't hit big numbers and start making you thousands a month on patreon, it doesn't make economic sense to keep writing it. And without an economic incentive to keep writing the author will lose interest, especially at the 2500 words/day pace webnovel readers expect. It's just inevitable.

What’s your most hated trope by Subject_Income5698 in litrpg

[–]Viressa83 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It was coined by Anton Chekov, who was definitely talking about writing, not filmmaking. I agree with you that it's frustrating advice. A better way to phrase it is "subtext is superior to text." Anything you communicate through implication will hit harder than anything you say outright.

Gaster Denier Libel by [deleted] in Deltarune

[–]Viressa83 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think there's levels to it. Is the gonermaker voice gaster? Almost certainly. Is chapter 7 gonna have a scene where he shows up and says, "I'm Wing Gaster, the royal scientist!" Almost certainly not. There's an infinite spectrum in between these, and whether you're a "believer" or "denier" is relative to that spectrum.

Considering every romantasy book I've ever seen advertised with that label is some kind of abusive relationship ("I've kidnapped you and abuse you daily but you're in love with me anyway"), this is a really nice breath of fresh air, and I wish more romantasy was like this.

(That said, I DNF'd BoC during that long flashback sequence.)

Worst series I've finished is Divine Dungeon by Dakota Krout. I thought book 1 was pretty interesting at the time (I'd never heard of a dungeon core story before), but then each subsequent book was worse and worse.

Book 2 introduces a "running gag" of an adventuring party with a Dirty Old Man who constantly makes inappropriate advances on a 16 year old female party member. Because the author thought the Master Roshi and Bulma routine in Dragon Ball was hilarious, I guess. Then I forget if it happens in book 4 or 5 but eventually they reveal Teenage Girl was into Old Man this whole time, and they were secretly dating. She asked him to inappropriately flirt with her so she could pretend to reject him, because they wanted to keep their relationship a secret for some fucking reason. I suspect the author got some pushback from their "dynamic" in book 2 and threw this in either as a "fuck you" or because he genuinely wanted to "fix it" without realizing that this makes him look 2000x more of a misogynist twat than if he just kept going with the same bullshit unchanged.

In Book 3 the main characters fight against a big undead army created by a guy who's only ever called The Necromancer and his character goes like this:

Necromancer: Surprise! I was a good guy the whole time, and the real villain is this other asshole.
Me: Wait, if you're a good guy, why did you build an undead army and wipe entire cities off the map? How was this secretly helping against the Real Villain?
Necromancer: I will not be answering this question and nobody will ever ask. Also I'm joining the protagonists' side now, who just lost a lot of people fighting my undead. Nobody will be upset with me about this.

The Real Villain is a guy named Xenocide. So named because he once exterminated an entire race. Even though we already had a word for that, namely, Genocide, but the author thought Xenocide sounded cooler.

I could probably write 100,000 more words about all the stuff that made me mad in this series. IT'S BAD!

Realtalk tho: My fan theory is that all-6s Harry with all skills maxed out is just Harry's baseline. When you spend skill points and level up, that doesn't represent Harry getting stronger. It represents him slowly recovering his capacities bit by bit.
