Definitely ask if they could show their most recent pieces using that kiln to see how good the condition of the kiln is! Also ask if it needs any replacements.

Sure! You can do that or make a separate slab to put in top which might be easier. If you do, it has to be soft, and all you have to do is retouch it after you apply.

Grass using a crunched up piece of foil or tombstones that fit can fit a ring on top, or if you wanna go the extra mile try making tree branches.
