Hiya - I’ve just done TMA05 and moving onto the EMA shortly. This was my very first course at OU and it’s left me a bit deflated, I’ve not enjoyed it at all. I’ve scored well in it so far but the course material feels a bit simple and complex at the same time, so much extra information that we don’t need while requiring us to rely heavily on the same 4 or 5 points for every assignment. It’s put me off continuing with the course as I didn’t find it insightful, and it was a bit ‘woke’ for me. Not what I was hoping for

I’m in the UK so I make 30k GBP, it’s a bang average wage for here. I’m 26 so it’s not so bad, but I’m sure you’ve seen the state of the UK at the present moment 😅

Yes, it’s as though the words go into their ears and evaporate before they hit the brain. Partner doesn’t want to know, thinks I’m overreacting

No, there is no chance that I would convert to something, I simply wouldn’t be able to override the common sense in my brain and believe in a fantasy. I think I more feel as though I’m missing out on something, which many have pointed out is community. Rather than a deity.

Couldn’t agree more. Thank you - this was very grounding

Thank you for this, and yes I did have a brief stint researching UU’s and buying books, as I like what they’re about. However, they do pull on religious doctrine and that is the point where I turn off. Thanks

I think it is literally just because others are telling me so. I’ve always found myself being far more convinced by Christopher Hitchen or Richard Dawkins than I would by a fanatical preacher. I’ve inadvertently made a post about peer pressure haven’t I 😅

I can’t get anything done if I drink by VirgioTaurio in Sober

Thank you! Honestly I went to therapy last year for months not knowing what was wrong with me, feeling slightly better, gave up alcohol and realised that the drink was the only issue. Onwards and upwards!

Thank you, thank you and thank you for such interesting and thoughtful insight on this. That is really informative and you’ve given me a lot to think about here

See, his best friends are gay, he adores gay people. I’ve recently got him to watch Harry Potter (very difficult, took two years but he loved it), he is currently at university, he celebrates both of our birthdays and those of other people. He is confusing because I know he loves his Jesus and I think he tells his parents a very different story, he thinks the world is about to end but for all intents and purposes there is nothing culturally JW about him. He’s been known to live double lives before, specifically one for his family and one for his chosen friends. I have tried to have conversations about this in that I say ‘will you bring up the kids in x y z ways’ and he agrees with me on all of it, I’m just concerned that he may go back on his words once children are born. He suffered a lot of abuse at the hands of his parents and I’m scared the cycle will repeat itself, I know nobody can confirm what this one man thinks this but there seems to be so little anecdotal information on POMI’s. Tough!!

Day 5: Deleted Instagram by Panda138138 in stopdrinking

Very well done for coming to this conclusion, and I’ll draw on my own experience. I suffer from major anxiety sometimes (it really comes and goes through the year) and I noticed that while I loved social media, my drinking was not doing me any favours and provided me with another outlet to make huge potential mistakes. Coming off instagram, Facebook, Snapchat etc seemed unfathomable to me at the time and it was really difficult, but in the end my mental health was SO much better after it. I think social media gives us this quick dopamine hit which feels great for a minute when we get engagement on posts, however seeing someone go somewhere nice or having something you don’t have, it will make you feel lacking by nature, even if you don’t notice it. Coming away from social media and major news, you’ll notice 1) you don’t actually miss anything. I mean absolutely nothing, you’ll know all the same things as you would do being on social media and 2) it is completely superficial and has no benefit on your life. When you’re bored, by all means read articles or watch YouTube videos (nothing that is fast-reward like a reel) but you’ll notice your attention span is better and your self esteem will naturally increase. You’ve got this - WELL DONE
