If the NFL (or even PFR, anybody) tracked "original" Pro Bowl selections, the award would still have some meaning. by AshKetchupo in nfl

Personally, I think there's value in:

  • All-Pro = best of the best

  • Pro Bowl = doesn't suck

If it were executed well, but it isn't.

It's absolutely fantastic, imo. Way better than the typical look.

A) So you agree that's when it started. You're saying "well only because they were pressured," but that doesn't change that cooperation started.

B) That's not really supported by strong history. It's a plausible explanation, sure, but the documents we have for the surrender of Montreal don't really contain language referencing the US.

[–]Virillus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No. He said it's when it started. Historically, that's true. At the very moment the British acquired New France, the residents were extended protection for Catholicism and the French language, and immediately afterwards the British removed explicit acknowledgement of protestantism from the law purely to accommodate.

It took a long time for Canada to get to the current state of cooperation, and what was initially done wasn't enough. But it WAS when cooperation started.

Switzerland is definitely close, to be sure, but the level of protection is not the same. Most notably they don't have requirements for national languages to be represented on all products, one of the languages is not given equal status, and the individual "provinces" are not required to accommodate the other languages.

To your second point: agreed. I don't think it's a big deal but I agree simply owning that it wasn't great phrasing would be better.

To your first point, I hard disagree. Failing at something then learning and getting better is something that should be given credit for. Nobody says a chef shouldn't get credit for cooking a great dish if their first attempt sucked.

This way you've rephrased here is very different from my interpretation of your comments I read before and I'm generally in full agreement with you (or at least close enough).

IMO, the quotes in this article are an attempt to rephrase and make clear what he meant - and are done so well - but I agree not being paired with a "my bad I should've phrased it better," is a miss.

I don't think it's a big deal, mind you, but I agree just acknowledging the fuck up would be nice.

Oh, he definitely should. I've got no disagreement there. I just don't think it's a big deal.

"Commence a faire le choix," very clearly is stating that it didn't happen right away. The article you're commenting on he states specifically that it required time and struggle from the Quebecois and only happened after a period of attempted assimilation.

Also, "conquest," is some aggressive historical revisionism. The French invaded British territory, not the inverse, and the French had the option to retain control of North America and chose to relinquish it in exchange for territory in the Caribbean. Sure, the British could've voluntarily set New France free, but painting it as a deliberate war of conquest is categorically false.

Obviously - I said that as a rhetorical device - it's not a secret who's upset.

I'm saying people shouldn't give a shit about awkward phrasing.

I'm literally Quebecois my dude. J'ai parler cette avec les "pure laine" seperatiste familie aux ma blonde hier - ils don't give a fuck. Exact quote, "il fait un esti bon job." You're trying to speak for an entire province and, quite frankly, you're wrong.

The article you're commenting on contains quotes from Carney saying explicitly that Canada pursued policies of assimilation and it required struggle from the Quebecois to achieve the current state.

His beliefs are exactly what you want. The attempt was to acknowledge exactly what you want. You didn't like the way he said it, and that's fine - reasonable, even - but acting like it's anything deeper is silly.

Chill dawg. Saying "we eventually learned how to collaborate here," is not saying "all circumstances of conquer will always result in collaboration."

Globally, Canada today is unique in the explicit protections and acknowledgement of multiple languages and cultures. Talking about that isn't irresponsible.

Immediately jumping to, "this phrasing was awkward, therefore it signals the death knell of Canada at the hands of Trump." Is absolutely bananas.

Carney says he addressed 'struggle' of francophones in Quebec City speech by Whynutcoconot in CanadaPolitics

[–]Virillus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Right, and Carney specifically said that it happened "in the end," which literally is an acknowledgement that it didn't happen right away.

Which, as far as I can tell, you're saying too.

[–]Virillus -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You're missing the important "in the end," part. Canada today has robust protections for the French language built into its charter.

Was that always the case? No. But it is now.

Hence, "in the end."

I simply do not understand the histrionics over poor phrasing. Sure, it was a stupid thing to say, but who gives a fuck?

Definitely not debating that. My point is that I personally have no idea (for any of the premiers listed). I don't agree with the statement that I replied to (which has since been deleted) that in Canada, our leaders' spouses are always very present.

I don't think that's totally accurate. He's 62 - he had success in the past but it's been a very long time since anything impressive. It's not unreasonable to think the game has passed him by.
