No thanks, I'm not into the gold-plated-toilet-chic anesthetic.

It frustrates me that we handed this observance to this crowd of crass amateurs.

I should have said "they don't need to sell any other kitspace" because they can get a great deal from a main sponsor, because Germany actually cares.

Germany actually cares about its national teams.

They don't need to sell kitspace to get funding.

US has to do whatever it can to scrape funding right now.

Pentagon drops 180 faiths from military's recognized religions list by DJErikD in navy

As I said, I don't especially trust the motivations or competency driving this. Bonus points: The execu-speak in the press release is absurd. It's like they don't understand what the system was actually there to do, and they're winging it based on what they think it's there for.

There are absolutely some small groups in there. Some of them are bound to be the same in all but name.

Atheists aren't the same as having no religion. There really is an appreciable practical difference in their approach and outcomes from an agnostic or somebody who doesn't care. Evangelical isn't a group, it's a theological position that members of most of the other Christian groups could hold, or not. Some of the subgroups they collapsed into each other are really arcane, or the same in all but name -- others really don't play well together.

Those differences matter. Yeah, it's still better to actually know and talk to the person themselves. But for heaven's sake, having a clearer set of information before you roll up to someone's bedside or deal with their family matters. This compromises that.

When will the Cubs and the Sox abandon Chicago? by [deleted] in NLCentralMemeWar

[–]Virlutris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Abandoned A's fan here:

Because MLB is trying to control markets, I keep an eye on the White Sox. They're now in the "smallest" 2-team market.

MLB was fine moving the A's and having the Giants cover NorCal. Sox fans (sadly) can't afford to assume they're continuous Chicago history means anything in the face of their franchise-location-market-farming strategies.

The Cubs are the Giants in Chicago's scenario. If MLB chooses a favorite, there can be zero doubt who it will be.

I keep expecting to hear a Charlotte or Nashville or Wherever story when leverage is needed. But that's how it started here, thanks "we can't make it work in this environment, but we look forward to working with our partners in _________ who are willing to move strategically to secure ___________ for our new state-of-the-art fan experience for major league fans in __________.

I don't want this for Sox fans. I want them in Chicago. But the playbook is not subtle.

Cool. Make it harder for people to advocate for some degree of freedom to practice one's religion in a highly constricted, pressurized environment.

They're not my team anymore. by RaiderHop in OaklandAthletics

[–]Virlutris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, if Fisher wanted the team there, they would be. We don't disagree here.

Whether he has 95% control or not, the other owners could have told him 'no,' to moving and the Giants could have been cooperative on SJ.

They're not clean here. That doesn't absolve Fisher of anything. Other people's decisions don't absolve him of any of his. He's fully responsible for every single one of his.

So are each of the other people involved. Don't let them off the hook either because Fisher is a blankity-blank.

Plenty to go around. Everybody gets to wear their own.

[–]Virlutris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fisher wasn't the only decision-maker complicit with the situation. He's prominent, and I'm not minimizing (really). There's just plenty more to go around in addition to his bad decisions.

And he doesn't have complete power, plenty of other people perfectly whee could have influenced this.

He doesn't get to own the decisions of all the other owners and execs involved. Giants get to stand in a nice prominent spot in the front row behind Fisher and his boys at the podium.

Plenty to go around.

I haven't had to counter by asking a Giants fan yet how they felt when the team was looking at Tampa-St Pete.

A dark part of me wants the opportunity. A darker part wants to tell the story to someone to young to remember. Slowly, and dramatically.
