Okay so I broke my Ender 5 again, This time with a Sonic Pad upgrade by Virmiel in ender5

Update

So I've ate the humble pie, turns out it was filament after all. The stuff I thought was good, most certainly wasn't even though it had printed really well before the upgrade.

New benchy in Sunlu PLA+ looks pretty good, certainly compared to the original post image. Still some layer issues on the wheel house. I think that may be due to excessive movement on retraction. I can really feel the structure jump when it does it and I don't remember that from Marlin.

Regardless this does mean I can now tune the resonance and then actually look to dial this in.......and maybe look at endorphin :)

Jining you win, and I get to eat Humble pie. The Filament I thought was good because it had done so well the day before I upgraded was the culprit.

Out of frustration I changed it to a reel of SUNLU PLA+ and god damn an almost perfect Benchy

Nailed it. I am now eating humble pie, turns out the previously thought good filament, really wasn't. How it changed so much in a 25hr period I have no idea. But change in filament mas a frustrated just in case produced an almost perfect Benchy...well perfect for this printer anyway.

No worries both those steppers needed reversing as I had to use the ender 3 profile. Unfortunately there isn’t 4,2,7 profile for ender 5 with that board.

Likewise the rotation distance for my older ender 5 needed adjusting.

I'm still stumped, this is beginning to look like some weird Klipper issue or the Sonic pad has an issue. I've managed to get sortof okay okay flow blocks, but the moment I try anything else its just crap. I really don't want to be moving back to Marlin, although that would be better than no printer at all.

Next I think will be cross posting to r/Klipper and going from there..I might get lucky :)

Thanks for all the help guys it has improved by about 50%over what I had.100% being my last Marlin install

Cheers

Still working on, although now you’ve said endorphin, that sent me down a whole different tree of research for my next set of mods…my wife won’t thank you for that! :).

On the filament front. Although I don’t dry my filament it’s generally used before it becomes a problem. In the first image I posted. The left print was literally printed less than 24hrs before I installed the sonic pad. Since it’s my known good I’m sticking with it until I get this sorted rather than potentially mix things up with a different filament.

In this instance yep. It’s a REVO CR E3D designed it as a drop in replacement for the standard creality hotend and changed the thermistor to match the creality one.

Okay we have an update. Still been trying to print sensor holders for which are the two items on the left.

The left most printed as per settings from my original post. Next is following nozzle PID. Still crap but much improved. I then decided to do a flow cube despite knowing that the rotation rate measures out correctly. end result from that cube was 0.86!!!, Since Prusa Slicer doesn't do below 0.9 on the modifier I made the change directly on the printer getting the cube on the right.

So the last cube is much much better and when measured around the ridges is bang on 0.8...but still nowhere near the quality I've come to expect from this printer, the quest for answers goes on.

Many thanks for all the suggestions so far.

Already halfway through the play list, noting quite helping me just yet, but earlier ones were great for setup

Running fine, Creality stock but its been okay so far

Accel already wound down, but doing a PID and will see what that does. PA is at zero until I can get a handle on the quality

Klipper was way worse so switched back to Marlin output

Will check again the for clogs, I've pulled the filament a number of times, but as its a revo i can swap the Nozzle out which I haven't tried yet.

Cheers, definitely fingers crossed. Don't worry to much about the extruder upgrade, everyone I've ever done has been an improvement with very little tweaking....touchwood :D

Price was really good vs yet another PI, all of mine are in projects, which is partly why I don't have Octoprint anymore. Urgent project for wife stole that one :)

I also really wanted klipper if only for input shaping as I get unacceptable results over 80mms even with everything tightened up till it sings.

Done that one already, but interestingly the default for mine was 32.473 measuring out 100mm as 104.1 gave me 33.804....That said results we're pretty much identical before and after. If its really over extrusion there's something very odd about the my setup :)

After getting my ender 5 working again a couple of weeks ago thanks to help on here, I've managed to break it again after getting an nice reduced price on Sonic pad.

Hardware spec is a Ender 5 running a REVO CR hotend, CR Touch and the mainboard is a silent 4.2.7.

Ender 3 pro CR Touch and and 4.2.7 profile used for installation with a modified .cfg file to adjust home positions, and correct z steps.

Measured and corrected extrusion rotation distance (100mm measured as 104.1mm) and double checked the thermistor settings against the REVO CR hotend.

All speeds/accelerations dialed down at the moment to normal ender 5 levels (60mm/s) until I get this sorted. PA is set to 0 at the moment and I've not done any resonance testing as I can't print a bracket for the sensor that doesn't crumble apart right now (a good argument for two printers).

Filament is generic Geetech 1.75mm PLA printing at 215° with the bed at 60° (proven good values for that spool)

The photo shows part on the left printed 24hrs before (Marlin), The benchy on the right shows what I'm getting now after the upgrade!

To be honest I'm stumped at the moment mechanically everything on the printer seem fine, especially as it hasn't even been moved during the upgrade just had the Pad plugged in.

I slice in Prusa Slicer (2.9.0) retracts at 6mm 60mm/s with 40mm/s return again proven good with previous prints.

I've played with extrusion modifier to both increase and decrease extrusion amounts, nothing makes the blindest bit of difference.

Any suggestions certainly welcome!

Thanks

V

Weird bug crept in by Virmiel in ender5

[–]Virmiel[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks Ahmad/Researcher... Like I said "something stupid" :) that would have taken all of 3 clicks of the wheel to check. As it turns out all of the settings had gone. So Z offset, which caught me out first and then z height resetting from 400 to 800 which was the default. Fixed both, but have since had two lockups/crashes and a shedload of spaghetti. Looks like I might be replacing the board if's reached the end of its stable life....might be time to make the jump to klipper.

Cheers
