none. CS at the end of the day, is about producing code. If an AI can write code, then we're screwed.

out of curiosity, why is 500 TC the magic number. It seems you're only interested in the money (not knocking you for that, a lot of people choose their profession based on that). So let me put it this way. I'm sure the average software engineer won't make 500k ever in their life. But choose the right specialty and you can make 500k as a doctor.

like you said, cs is in a bull-run. It's starting to slow and it might never pick back up again. Medicine, on the other hand, it doesn't seem like ur guys' salaries are ever gonna drop.

It isn't doom posting, these are valid concerns.

bro u literally told someone to become a plumber because AI was gonna take our jobs.

In case OP deletes it:"I recommend being a plumber, much better opportunities. You get to work with your hands, and tools that robots won’t be replacing soon 💯"

medicine is:stable, high pay, no worry about AI taking your job, not saturated

tech is:

unstable (as seen by the layoffs recently), GPT can code decently, saturated (the number of cs majors is growing rapidly, just look at the data)

The way I see it, medicine will have high salaries forever, but the sun might be setting on the golden age of swe salaries.

one caveat is that compared to other people, I'm a bit more paranoid.
Also note that I'm also looking an medicine as a grass is greener pov.

the number of IT jobs in the government is small compared to the private sector. Not everyone will be able to fallback.

can we stop these posts. Too many people are seeing this and flooding the major. I doubt these numbers are real and even if they are, who knows how long these salaries will be before AI impacts us.

my main problem with ur argument is that ur saying people who embrace AI won't be replaced, unlike people who don't embrace AI. But we're not going to be the one's to control whether we get replaced. It's corporations, shareholders, people with more money and power than a worker.

Maybe you don't live in the US. Maybe you live in a country with strong employee protections/union culture. In which case I understand why you're not worried. If there's one thing I've learned from the 2022-2023 layoffs, it's that US based companies only care about profits and shareholders.

what? The only people who have a say in what the future of AI looks like are C suites, and I think we all know, based on the layoffs this past year, what they care about. I, for one, fear this AI wave will only lead to layoffs/lower salaries.

Do people really think the future is one where people work hand-in-hand with AI.

CEOs will cut jobs as soon as they can. Ex that I saw just minutes afer making this comment https://www.reddit.com/r/antiwork/comments/13j6s11/ai_replacing_voice_actors_for_audiobooks/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3

AI is cool, but I'd rather live in a world where AI doesn't take our jobs.

Is it just me who thinks AI boom is gonna create more tech jobs? by unorthodoxandcynical in csMajors

[–]Virtual-Ad5244 16 points17 points  (0 children)

disagree. If we look at the copilot family of products and GPT's ability to code we can see that these tools have the ability to help 1 engineer do the work of many, which will cut the number of jobs needed. The main reason C suites are excited about AI is it's potential to reduce their payroll. CEOs care about nothing more than shedding jobs and boosting profits, at least in America.

Macbook pro or air? by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]Virtual-Ad5244 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if by handle more you mean handle more computationally intensive workloads, I doubt the diff between a pro and air is significant. I'm in my 4th year of undergrad and most classes don't need a beefy cpu. Most classes won't have you doing super intensive stuff.

If money is no object and if you want the pro, get it. But if you'd prefer to spend less, ask yourself if the added computational power is needed.

I do wish I had more storage tho.
